If, a few days for the election, someone told you that Trump would get over 71 million votes, what would you think would happen? Would you think that he would win?

No because we thought 150 million votes was very possible.

Most people were prediciting higher turnout and Trump and definitely Biden surpassing Obama 2008. Those double digit or close to double digit polls were absolute junk.

High turnout, but lower than the final result. A Trump win. I might even have predicted a McSally win.

Trump lost due to the fact after he caught Covid, he was telling us since he got over it, then Covid isn't a problem. If Trump wouldn't have said that, in Covid not being a problem, he would be the victor not the loser

I wouldn’t be surprised because we knew this was going to be a record-shattering turnout.

A few days before the election, yes--people are idiots and I've known that forever. If you'd told me six months ago I wouldn't have believed it because I never expected turnout to be so high.

Not sure. It’s always pretty difficult to predict turnout - if it was easy, projecting elections would be pretty easy.

no because a few days before the election we knew that over 100 million people had already voted and that turnout would be massive.  I'd still be dumbfounded that 71 million people are that moronic though.

It's funny that we consider this probably around 66% turnout to be earth-shatteringly high, when it's really pathetically low for a western democracy. In Denmark we have roughly 85% turnout in every single parliamentary election. Even for local elections our turnout is never as low as 66%.

But at least we should be happy that US turnout is on the upswing. Let's hope it doesn't drop down to the 50's once Trump is no longer featured.

Bully for you guys. Meanwhile here in Australia we have 92% turnout. Tongue

No. As surprising it is to me that he somehow found millions of new voters to come out to support him, I was expecting turnout around 160 million. However, I was also expecting Biden to win the popular vote by 8-10%.

I would have thought that meant Joe Biden would get at least 80 million votes and handily win the electoral College.

Yeah, 66% is not that high for many European countries who are used to 70%+ or even 80%+ turnout general elections.

But when it comes to comparing the US, UK and Canada ... they are about the same now.

Civic education is really bad in the US. I know, I am a history/government teacher

While it varies greatly, what we teach is mostly set by state and local governments. Which a bunch of redneck republicans in the state assembly and sometimes on the local school board will demand a watered down version. They don't want us teaching anyting that would produce more democrats under the reasoning of "no controversy"

The Trump campaign did an excellent job of getting out its vote in 2020. Give Trump and his campaign credit for that.

I still hate his guts.
