Yeah, you're right. Laffey won't win but neither will Chafee. I don't care that you get your laugh in but I do ask you to tell your friends on your side that the Dems don't have a good shot when someone like Jim Webb is polling in the low-mid 30s in the Virginia Senate race.

I've never said Webb had a chance, much as I like him. And I'm still keeping RI as Republican, unless any further polls look similar (or Laffey pulls ahead)

As of right now, Chafee is going to lose.

Wow...

Still, I would prefer a Laffey nomination, and for good reason too Smiley

The primary?  I thought he was leading?

I wasn't talking about the primary. He'll win that but lose in November.

If the RI GOP nominates Laffey, they will basically be handing us a Senate seat, much like they did in IL in 2004.

Really?  Why do you think that?  My prediction:

WHITEHOUSE 49%
CHAFEE 48%

I'm holding off on precentages for a few months but as of now I'd say that Whitehouse would take the seat by two-three points.

At least one good thing here is Chafee is going to have be even more liberal for the next couple months, he'll probably be voting in step with Barbara Boxer.

I wouldn't count Chafee out yet. He has a habit of coming back and burning it up on election night.

Wow, keystone is suggesting a GOP loss before I am, never thought I would see that.

At this point I think Chafee will win by the skin of his teeth if he wins the Primary.  Will be close and that can change, but I think if he survives the Primary he will be in for a tough battle, but hold on to the seat (if he was any further to the right no, but Chafee's opposition to Bush the GOP kleadership the conservative direction of the GOP & his past threats to bolt the GOP might be enough space to hold the seat for him.  On the other hand if Laffey wins the primary, its a cakewalk, Laffey would absolutley get demolished and the Dems would also pick up the Govenor's mansion as a result.

We don't actually have a Governor's mansion in Rhode Island, he's just gets a car to take him home at night. Hey, we're a small state, keep your smart remarks to yourself.

Though a huge Whitehouse supporter, I am cautious by nature so I'm not ready to put this race in the D column yet. However, I am very encouraged. Besides the matchup numbers in this poll, I think the best news for Whitehouse is that his favorability is at 62% with quite a few still undecided (the highest favorability of anyone in the race)- all candidates are on the air now and Whitehouse's adds seem to be having the biggest effect.
