One strategy might be to pick someone new.

He did better with African-Americans than any Republican president in generations, and he improved his numbers with Hispanic Americans. It would make sense for him to pick a running mate of color (Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, etc.) The best choice might be someone elected in 2022.
