Good to see a region levying a 20% tax on salt, an essential mineral the human body requires to live.

Also, depending on how you define processed meat the tax might not apply to burger patties or it might also apply to ground beef mince.

Also, depending on how you define processed meat the tax might not apply to burger patties or it might also apply to ground beef mince.
Not only does this make it financially difficult to obtain the vital nutrient of salt, it also makes it difficult to obtain the #1 source of the even harder to get vital nutrient of iodine and would apply to a huge portion of food items simply for containing salt despite moderate amounts of salt consumption being perfectly healthy. "Processed meats" is another ridiculous term, what's processed? Any meat that has had something done to it before packaging? Becuase ground beef on its on is not in need of condemnation and once again it is now financially more difficult to obtain a huge source of protein, iron, etc. that used to be easily obtainable. This is a travesty and needs to be repealed immediately. If any legal action against this provisions could be taken that anyone knows of, please get in contact!

Yeah I concur with the comments above - I urge Governor R2D2 to veto this travesty and allow the people of Lincoln to weigh in on this misguided bill.

Well, considering I don't hate poor people and think taxing them for eating convenient food instead of investing in programs that assist them economically so that they can afford healthier food while educating them about better things to eat--this is pretty easy.

Veto

I strongly discourage the Council from wasting time by overriding my decision, and I hope the comments from our friends in this thread reinforce why.

I move to Override the Governor's Veto.

Please cast your votes. Pursuant to the Legumes Deserve Respect Amendment, a 3/5 majority of sitting Councillors is required.

Wait a minute, only a simple majority is needed to override? That's ridiculous.

Yes, as veto override threshold is 3/5 in Lincoln, you only need extra votes if it's a 7 member council (since 4-3 = 57%). This is a 5 member council.

The intention of this was I believe to prevent a situation where an obstructionist Governor forces the populace to the polls each weekend. (Since the veto is not a formal veto but a veto to referendum. A referendum will be held should the override vote fail.)

There is no point of veto power existing if a simple majority can overrule it.

Then I look forward to having your support when we move to repeal the Philadelphia Plan later this session.

This issue did not come from the Philadelphia Plan, it came from one of several confusing later amendments.

There was a version of the Philly Plan that had a 2/3 veto override?

I know prior to Legumes Deserve Respect it was simple majority, now it is 3/5 (which is the same as simple majority usually but whatever). I know Transit at one time wanted the Governor's first veto in each council to have a 4/5 override, but I don't think it ever passed (?).

NAY, I voted for this, because I think this is a discussion worth having, but it's just that a discussion, and as such the citizens deserve input on it, so I support this going to referendum

By a vote of 2-2-1, the veto is sustained.

A referendum will be held beginning November 27th.

So just going to throw a quick tip the governor's way; since you had, by the time you acted on the bill, enough votes to sustain a veto/reject the bill, the better strategy would have been to redraft the bill into meaninglessness and have the Council sustain your redraft, thus sidestepping the referendum process entirely. This type of scenario is one of many reasons I added the redraft power in the first place!
