In 2016, [INSERT Democratic Candidate here] lost against Trump. It was a humiliating loss, etc, etc.

It's 2020. Coronavirus is ravaging the United States, 200,000 are dead, Trump himself has caught the virus. The economy is doing poorly, people are out of work, and there's no second stimulus. Everything happening in OTL is happening in this timeline too, except Hillary Clinton did not run in 2016 but has decided to run in 2020. She has defeated Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Mike Bloomberg in the primaries and will challenge Donald Trump in the general election.

What is the polling average? Who is raising the most money? Who has the highest favorability? Who has Clinton selected to be her running mate? Is the Emails scandal making any noise? Where is Hillary campaigning? What states is she doing better than Biden is now? What states is she doing worse? What states will she pick up?

Assuming Hillary doesn't run in 2016, she probably doesn't run in 2020 either.

If she did, she'd be trailing in the polls, but she'd have a decent shot at winning the electoral college, without winning the popular vote.

Hillary Clinton/Kamala Harris 45% 278 EV
Donald Trump/Mike Pence 46% 260 EV
Green Party 7%

2016

Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE) / Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
Businessman Donald Trump (R-NY) / Governor Mike Pence (R-IN) ✓

2020

President Donald Trump (R-FL) / Vice President Mike Pence (R-IN)
Fmr. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D-NY) / Fmr. Governor Deval Patrick (D-MA) ✓

Or whatever Biden's map ends up being.

Yeah no, Biden would have won easily in 2016.

Touring the country as a surrogate for President Biden.

Biden would not have lost to Trump, so I'm assuming the Democrats nominated Booker. The exact results may have been a tad different, Booker holding MI due to black turnout being higher or something

If Hillary is the nominee for 2020 then the Democratic primaries would be much worse, as the party would show it has learned nothing from losing in 2016 and rejecting wholesale the progressive left much more dramatically than Biden. Hillary would be forced to actively campaign across the upper midwest where the horse race continues. States like Ohio would be totally uncompetitive even in light of the pandemic. She would only win due to the pandemic. Without the pandemic we get four more years.

However, if Hillary is sane enough not to run or is otherwise defeated, then she just becomes another surrogate.

I’d imagine how Trump will react to this result
