What was the rationale for this friend of yours? Is it similar to what General Mung Beans described?

Actually no, he's conservative but not particularly ideological and I don't think is religious. It's more just that he has a populist outlook and seems to be a contrarian who has a particular hatred for the political preferences of wealthy New Englanders.
