Both candidates exceeded expectations. However, the overall winner was Biden, both because he looked the part and because there was no major knockout punch.
Trump was controlled, quick on the feet and reasonably civil. While his misleading accusations and outright lies were cringeworthy, they may actually help him with less informed voters.
Biden was mostly composed, focused and substantive, and certainly looked and sounded more presidential. For policy wonks, he clearly committed to significant policies and showed his understanding of the issues.
Ultimately, Trump needed a knockout and it just didn't happen. He will pick up a few wavering republicans, but will still trail Biden by 8-10%, simply not enough to win key swing states.
Short of a major, major surprise, this election is now pretty much over - it will likely be a landslide for Biden!
