I don’t think anyone will care about the oil thing. I really don’t. Even in Texas, I don’t think a lot of people who disagree that we need to transition away from oil eventually (all he said) were ever gonna vote for a Democrat anyway.

I think Biden, but I very hate the oil soundbite and how it's going to be played for 12 days

Honestly, I thought all three people (candidates+moderator) did a pretty good job, at least compared to last time. But hard to see this as worse than a tie for Biden, which is a win when you're up 5+ points in the likely tipping point states.

I weirdly enough saw a lot of Trump in Biden tonight. The "lies" "wrong," and "Your running against Me, I defeated those other guys" are all statements that would be at home coming out of Trumps mouth. I think that put Trump on awkward footing at times. It may lead to surprises whenever the instant polls come out.

How badly do you think that remark will hurt him in the Houston metro/texas in general?

A lot of Texas has already voted.

He did some of that last time too: “I AM THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!” and “Will you shut up, man?” notably. But he does it in a less nasty way and with less frequency. It makes him seem tough enough but without coming across as a mean-spirited bully.

Looking forward to Luntz's focus group of 10+ white men say how they think Trump won because he didn't crap his pants.

I say Biden.

Biden came at this with more facts on his side.  But Trump probably doesn’t lose any support either, as his performance wasn’t the trainwreck it was in the first debate until the middle and end.

I think because this one was less divisive the swing voters will view it as a draw.

as someone who owns part of an oil ranch...and already voted for Joe...Tongue

Idk! I think we'll be getting some ads out of it here. I'm trying to think of who it is in Texas that would hear the line and think "Hmmm...well I was voting Joe, but..."

My big thought would be that the Houston economy was looking bad when Covid came...then oil dove in May...and we still aren't sure. I guess I could see some people hating the uncertainty. On the other hand, I (and others!) should like the idea of transitioning away from an economy that oscillates so, so much.

People are grossly overestimating the rationality of voters.

Trump is not going to lose any more POC than Biden is going to lose Texas after today.

This thread is just “Which candidate do I support?”

I called it a wash, but if you forced me to pick one of them, I would say Trump.

I support Biden (I am an ex-Republican FWIW).

I can certainly point out Biden's failings (he rambles and should provide shorter answers and not snipe back and forth with Trump).

Sam Elliott narrated an ad for Biden already though. Shouldn’t that have locked down Texas for him???

Willie Nelson also endorsed him and held fundraisers! (Wasn’t enough for Beto, granted, but close!)

This thread is just “Which candidate do I support?”

Wrong.

I couldn’t loathe Trump more.

But the debate was Tilt Trump till the end when Biden coughed it up on the Oil comment.

So that's somehow on par or worse than gleeing over parents of immigrants going missing or calling Hispanics "low IQ?"

This thread is just “Which candidate do I support?”

Not entirely.  Everyone knows I support Biden, but I'd call it a wash; before the "transition from oil" comment (which is what a lot of the media will focus on) I had Biden ahead.

Oil is not an infinite resource and there absolutely needs to be a plan to move away from such heavy dependence on it while we still have enough to maintain things in the meantime.

it's funny that people here think "oil workers" is what's swinging Texas lol.

Both candidates exceeded expectations.  However, the overall winner was Biden, both because he looked the part and because there was no major knockout punch.

Trump was controlled, quick on the feet and reasonably civil.  While his misleading accusations and outright lies were cringeworthy, they may actually help him with less informed voters.

Biden was mostly composed, focused and substantive, and certainly looked and sounded more presidential.  For policy wonks, he clearly committed to significant policies and showed his understanding of the issues.

Ultimately, Trump needed a knockout and it just didn't happen.  He will pick up a few wavering republicans, but will still trail Biden by 8-10%, simply not enough to win key swing states.

Short of a major, major surprise, this election is now pretty much over - it will likely be a landslide for Biden!

A lot of Texas has already voted.

I don't have any polling data in front of me, but I doubt that people who are big supporters of the oil industry are the voters turning Texas purple -> blue.

Who is changing their vote to support Trump now because of this mediocre debate performance?

Well first the momentum would have to exist, then it would have to be in favour of Trump.
