Let's say that Vice President Al Gore decided to not run because he didn't want to be the bearer of bad news (Impeachment, Monica Lewinsky), who would be in the race? All I know is that Bill Bradley would have been a contender but who else? Who would secure the 2000 Democratic nomination?

Kerry might have run four years earlier, for one thing.

the Dem Candidates would've been Kerry, Feinstein, Dean, Bradley, Breaux, and maybe several other Dems. A lot of good candidates didn't run because Gore ran and while we saw that Kerry isn't the best possible option against Bush, there are still stars and popular senators/governors like Dean or Breaux that could beat, either barely or via landslide depending on how they campaign.

I think Kerry probably would've been a better candidate for 2000 than Gore and Gore the better candidate for 2004 tbh.

Assuming Kerry runs and wins...

Governor George W. Bush (R-TX) / Fmr. Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney (R-WY) ✓
Senator John Kerry (D-MA) / Senator John Edwards (D-NC)

He wins over some New England liberals but that's about it. Moreover, Kerry's run is seen as a refutation of the Clinton administration, which Republicans are sure to point out a lot.

Seems about right. The Democrats in 2004 likely nominate a Howard Dean/Wesley Clark ticket. I feel that such a ticket would have won Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennesse, North Carolina, Kentucky, and West Virginia, but lost California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware in addition to the states John Kerry lost IRL.

Gephardt is also a possibility. He was the ranking Democrat in the House and was from a competitive state (at least at the time).
