Al Gore runs for the Democratic nomination, largely to deny the nomination to Hillary Clinton (who he despises), and wins the nomination on Super Tuesday after knocking out Hillary and John Edwards.

He faces John McCain in November.

Does Gore, eight years removed from his last bid for elected office, win?

Who is his running mate this time (remember, in 2000 it was Joe Lieberman...)?

Gore wins. If Edwards doesn't have his scandal, Gore chooses him.

I think Gore wins Tennessee in 2008.

I don't see it. Tennessee shifted hard right through the 90's and 2000's, so much so that Gore couldn't win it in 2000. Kentucky and Arkansas are more likely as those were both bluer (atlas redder) at the state level, and even then that's stretching it. I think he wins Montana before he wins any non GA/NC/VA southern state.

TN voted about the same as KY in the actual 2008, I think maybe even slightly left. With Gore having the home state advantage, he might have a shot in a year much more Democratic than 2000 with a much less Southern-friendly Republican nominee. That said, he could have won KY, AR, MO, and WV too — all states Hillary actually led in the polls.

Although, I didn’t take into account that Gore had already made An Inconvenient Truth and branded himself as a climate advocate at this point. This might hurt him in coal country.

He'd have a shot at TN & AR and would probably be favored in MO but as you said due to his climate advocacy essentially DOA in WV & KY
