I understand that South Dakota was close due to the farming issues in the 80’s and Dukakis won neighboring Iowa handily. It still really stands out to me just how close this state was, given it’s such a republican state. Thoughts?  Had the Dukakis campaign actually campaigned there and targeted it with ads could it have flipped or was it too inelastic for a Democratic candidate to win? We all know Dukakis was not a good candidate, and the 3 electoral votes wouldn’t have made much a difference but this result still really fascinates me.

I think that was the closest Johnson state that could have turned blue had Dukakis spent some time there. So yea, I think Michael Dukakis could have flipped The Mount Rushmore State had he done just that.
