I don’t think this would work, according to the Judiciary Committee rules, 9 members are required for the transaction of business and a majority of the committe is needed to report nominations out of the committee, so given that there are 12 Republicans on the committee it doesn’t really matter what Democrats do.

Two members of the minority are required for a quorum.

I don't think it'll stop anything. Push comes to shove, they bypass the committee and proceed immediately to a vote on the Senate floor.

If there are enough healthy Republicans for them to get the necessary quorum on the Senate floor,  While I'm dubious of the long-term value of this stunt, it may prove effective in the short-term.

I think the Democrats on the committee should have just said they don’t want to put their health at risk when Republicans are lying about COVID, refusing to wear masks, and refusing to get tested.

The party that doesn’t see any point in wearing masks or social distancing, isn’t going to let a little thing like a few positive Covid-19 diagnoses get in the way of ramming through a SCOTUS nominee.  Chuck Grassley could be comatose and breathing through a ventilator, and Mitch McConnell would drag him into the chamber by the ankles and interpret "a pulse means Aye, no pulse means Nay".

It's not that much a stunt if the reason they are doing it is because of quorum games. Two can easily play this and if the minority party has actual stopping power, the senate could easily be shut down permanently.

You detect the pretense of trying to stop something the Democrats have no ability to stop.

I mean... yes?
In 1964, California Senator Clair Engle was terminally ill from a brain tumor which had left him partially paralysed and unable to speak. He was brought to the Senate floor on a wheelchair to vote on the Civil Rights Act and he indicated his Aye vote by slowly lifting his arm and pointing to his eye.

Schumer is daring McConnell to change the rules to no longer require a quorum on SCOTUS nominees, so that Dems don’t have to be the ones to do it when they pack the court. Surely McConnell’s earlier elimination of the filibuster for SCOTUS nominees will be helpful for them as well.
