Err... you are a German. Your country also uses an electoral college to elect your President.

Apples and oranges. The President of Germany is not as important a position as the President of the United States.

I am a fierce opponent of the Bundesversammlung (the official name of the electoral college, within whose remit the election of the Bundespräsident falls), but it does have two advantages over its American counterpart:

1.) Each Bundesland dispatches a number of delegates to the Bundesversammlung proportionally to its number of inhabitants. (Half the delegates are "born" (geboren) electors, i.e. members of the Bundestag; the other half are "chosen" (gekoren) electors, i.e. selected by the state parliaments.)

2.) There is no WTA mode when selecting the delegates.
