Native burial sites blown up for US border wall

Quote from: BBC
Native American burial sites have been blown up by construction crews building the US-Mexico border wall, says a lawmaker and tribal leaders.

Authorities confirmed that "controlled blasting" has begun at Arizona's Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, a Unesco recognised natural reserve.

Raul Grijalva, a Democratic congressman, told the Intercept the destruction is "sacrilegious".

The government failed to consult the Tohono O'odham Nation, he said.

Nothing unexpected from what's basically a cartoon villain administration at this point, but the symbolism just offers itself on a silver platter.

Inshallah (if I may say so), something will be done about this:

My advice to that Fisher guy: shorten the workdays and let your employees take a rest. After all, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Remember back in 2016 when a lot of Native voters either voted for Stein or stayed home because they were unhappy with Clinton's lack of support for the Standing Rock protests? I'm sure this won't rile up that voting bloc against Trump at all in a key swing state.

Was this a violation of a standing treaty?

The administration literally waived the Native American Graves Protection Act to do this. So yes, this was a classic example of the U.S. ignoring promises made to Native American tribes. Is that not enough?

The continued treatment of indigenous people like this can only last so long in a changing era...

Doesn't seem like there was ever a U.S. treaty with the Tohono O’odham, as the US took over the territory from Mexico with the Gadsden Purchase.

Construction like this would normally have to comply with NAGPRA, NHPA, and a bunch of other laws, but the REAL ID Act passed in 2005 says that the government can ignore any law it needs to for the purpose of constructing barriers at the border.

Border security is a real issue at Organ Pipe Cactus Monument and the Tohono O’odham Reservation.  There's got to be a better way to go about it though.

Aside from the obvious legality of the issue, why does that matter?

I've seen enough horror films to know how this ends. I expect the border wall to be haunted from this point forth. If you hear any reports of flickering lights, noises from beyond the grave, or possible dead CBP agents, you'll know who to blame/thank

I don't believe we should violate standing treaties with Indian Tribes.  (I'm using the Constitutional terminology here.)  If we made a deal, we should keep it, unless it's a deal that somehow violates the Constitutional Rights of other parties not party to the deal.

I do believe we should do what is necessary to minimize the influx of illegal immigrants, and I view most people here as being of the opinion that we should not do so, even to the point of simply failing to enforce laws on the books.

Well, building hundreds of kilometres of an astonishingly useless border wall certainly isn't stopping anyone from coming to the US.

But there's always a silver lining: I'm happy to see the more fanatical of Republicans waste their money on GoFundMes that go either towards this boondoggle or straight into some grifter's pocket.

They're taking a page out of the Turkish playbook from their war on Kurds in occupied Afrin.
It is unfortunate (albeit predictable) that the Kurdish cause has been astroturfed by Western liberals who want Israel 2.0

The relationships between the constituent parts of the DFNS are not really comparable to that between Israel and Gaza or the West Bank.

This is a disgusting way to talk to anyone, especially if your offense at this heinous action has anything to do with principle rather than partisanship.

Narrator: it was all to do with partisanship.

If this works anything like last year's British election, it will get worse until election day and then calm down within weeks afterwards.

A wall being climbable does not make it useless. It's just not as effective as money spent elsewhere on other means of securing the border.

According to the CBP website, 350 miles of the border wall/fence has been constructed to date.
