 Meanwhile he's also doing this.

“I am disappointed that the Court departed from its prior reasoning and imposed straight ticket voting only weeks before a general election. My office has filed a motion to stay the district court’s injunction,”

In 2014, there was a massive turnover of row offices as Rick Perry finally retired, and you ended up with a bunch of corrupt mediocrities who would never have a prayer of winning statewide office in a competitive two-party state.

The only ones who have managed to carry out their jobs at least competently are Comptroller Glenn Hegar and Land Commissioner George P. Bush.

Abbott has announced he intends to run for a third term which means everyone else likely will as well.

Dan Patrick and Ken Paxton are the most vulnerable of the bunch, so it will be interesting to see if the Democrats can recruit good candidates and are willing to spend the money to take them out.

It's possible, but would likely be tough in a Biden midterm. It does speak volumes that Hegar and George P. did so much better than Patrick and Paxton in 2018.

My hunch is that George P. Bush is going to seek higher political office-probably either Governor or Senator-down the road.

Is there any chance that he and Louie Gohmert are somehow related? They have somewhat of a resemblance between them. It's not surprising, given that both are ignorant extremists.

He's going to run for governor in probably 2026, running on a retread of his family's "immigrants are our future, let's cut some more capital gains taxes" brand and get steamrolled in the primary by whoever can play the White Grievance Card the most effectively.

I wouldn't be surprised. Didn't a son of Marvin Bush lose a congressional primary in the Houston area earlier this year? As I've said before, when you couple this with Joe Kennedy's defeat in the Massachusetts Senatorial primary against Ed Markey, it definitely seems like voters have soured on the old presidential political dynasties. And even if Bush were able to get through the primary, he may have a difficult time winning a general, as Texas will be more Democratic by that point, and I'm certain they will have broken through at the state level.

It's actually Neil Bush's son Pierce. He managed to finish in third in the primary for TX-22 behind a corrupt county sheriff and an eccentric rich perennial candidate who were both playing heavily to the Trumpists.

He ran a poor campaign that was basically "We have to say no to socialism! America isn't about sitting around getting everything handed to you!" which was a very poor message to be delivered by a guy who wouldn't be a credible candidate if he weren't the grandson and nephew of two presidents.

That's what happens when one has an authoritarian clique in power in a near-one-Party state.

Corrupt pols can lose in elections going well for their party (See Congressman William "Bribes in the Freezer" Jefferson, who lost a super-safe D district in the same year in which Barack Obama won a near-landslide). Texas is now close to being competitive in statewide elections, and demographic change (fast-growing Hispanic electorate, liberal non-Hispanics moving in from other states, especially California, Illinois, and Michigan) makes Texas less of a lock for statewide elections in even normal years for partisan voting. Texas is becoming more like the USA as a whole, and may soon be the closest big state to being a microcosm of America except perhaps for Florida.

To Hell political corruption! There is no excuse for it!

The 5th Circuit laughed this out of their court.

The Texas legislature eliminated straight-ticket voting in 2017, effective with the 2020 general election. Someone who wanted to mount a constitutional challenge could have done so 3 years ago.

Instead, they waited until this Spring, when the federal district court dismissed the case for a lack of standing (but included a checklist of things to do if they wanted to refile).

They changed the plaintiff to an AFL-CIO front group and filed again a couple of weeks ago, arguing that voters would die unless they could vote straight ticket.

The district court ruled that even though paper ballots had already been mailed out, that the voting machines for in-person voting must be re-programmed - and that it didn't matter if the paper ballots and machine ballots matched. While counties might know how to program their machines for straight ticket, they might not if they have switched machines since the last election. It would not have been a requirement since straight ticket had been eliminated three years ago.

County elections officials submitted affidavits that it would be catastrophic to reprogram machines at this time, with 1000s of ballot styles required.

If he's guilty, yes.

He's entitled to a trial by a jury of his peers, just like the rest of us, as far as locking him up is concerned.  If Texans don't like the news reports they don't have to vote for him in 2022.

In a way, you have a point-since the vast majority of Republican politicians (especially in Congress) are white males, and tend to be either middle-age or elderly.

 Meanwhile he's also doing this.

“I am disappointed that the Court departed from its prior reasoning and imposed straight ticket voting only weeks before a general election. My office has filed a motion to stay the district court’s injunction,”
RIP McCaul Roy and others if he fails to get the ruling overturned

It was stayed by the 5th Circuit. It was a totally pathetic ruling by the district court judge.
