I still believe that Trump has more to gain from this through a potential sympathy bump, but a lot of posters disagree. How do you think this will change the race?

Biden, it just makes everyone focus on how terrible his response has been

Trump probably because no one wants to see the President suffer (even if they dislike him) I could see undecideds vote for Trump

There is no such thing as a sympathy vote.

Easily Trump. This will energize his base like never before and with some nasty comments from his detractors all but guaranteed, he'll build up some sympathy.

I mean, it at least hurts Trump. He spent all that time mocking Biden's health and downplaying the virus and karma finally hits him. He looks bad.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Trump benefits from this, since most voters are drooling idiots who can probably be convinced that just because he's felt it maybe he'll take it seriously.

Again not saying it will happen, but it would not be at all surprising.

You say that as if they're not already energized to the max.

Not at 2016 levels they weren't. They will be now, mark my words.

All the people thinking this is going to be great news for Trump need to look around at the house of cards he's been trying to build this election season. All year long, he's been refusing to acknowledge how serious the pandemic really is, being a dumbs**t about masks, denying hard science, and trying to convince us - as it were - that there is no war in Ba Sing Se, and now he's the one who's sick. Not only does it remind all the people who think he's some untouchable tough guy president that he's a very mortal old man with health problems, it throws his hypocrisy into stunning contrast. More practically, it prevents him from doing the one thing he's good at: rabble-rousing. For at least two weeks of the very short remains of this electoral season, Trump has a choice to make: either stop holding rallies and let Biden trample him in the enthusiasm game, or keep holding them and be excoriated as a blithering moron.

No real change.  People will think Trump is an idiot for making fun of it, but they probable weren’t going to vote for him anyways.

From another thread:

I guess I'll leave my serious answer.

He's not dropping to 37% after this or anything like that, but I think his strongman image takes a decent hit. Someone else here brought up the parallels to "weak frail Hillary" at the 9/11 service and I think soft supporters aren't gonna wanna support someone in ill health (Not even getting into his emotions/incompetence of COVID & pandemic protocol).

To put it simply, this doesn't benefit him at all. Or downballot Republicans, for that matter

Um, no. He has lost about 8% of his 2016 base. His current base is not enough to win. Trump getting COVID-19 is NOT going to change the dynamics of the election (unless he passes away, which is unlikely).

not to be morbid but i feel like people would be less inclined to vote for someone who's sick, especially since he falls in the most vulnerable age group

also don't think this is the same as when reagan got shot since that was someone directly trying to murder him

Sure thing, Mr. Kanye has locked up Minnesota for Trump.

Also, tell me more about how incumbent president Hillary Clinton won after collapsing from pneumonia.

One of the only polling advantages Trump has is being stronger and more fit for the job than Biden. COVID threatens that.

That spike in Johnson's approval happened before he was diagnosed with the virus. Even then, every world leader got a boost in their approval, sick or not... minus Trump, of course.

Looks like it had a major effect on PredictIt.

Ohio flipped to Biden.

Nevada, Minnesota, and New Hampshire are over 80 cents for Biden.

Alaska and South Carolina are now in the likely column at 75 cents for both.

Iowa and Georgia are getting dangerously close to flipping.

By Halloween I expect the PredictIt map to be the 413 map, plus maybe more if Alaska and South Carolina get more competitive.

As TSA pointed out above, Johnson's approval shot up almost 30% after his diagnosis. Is this a hail Mary? Perhaps, but if anyone can make a con work it's this monster.

I think it depends how Biden messages it. Big test for his campaign. I think they need to flat-out "go there" and blame Trump for his own infection.
