It is astonishing to realize that Jimmy Carter has now been out of office for nearly 40 years-the longest retirement of any President (he surpassed Herbert Hoover in 2012), and that he is the longest-lived president in U.S. history (having taken that title from George H.W. Bush) and has had the longest marriage of any President (having also taken that title from Bush). If he can hold on for another four years, he'll be the first centenarian President, and I hope that he gets that distinction as well.

Regardless of what you think of the man, Reagan arguably had one of the most successful Presidencies of the 20th century.In the time period being discussed here only LBJ and Nixon came close and if events had turned otherwise (LBJ's presidency not being derailed by Vietnam; Nixon never getting involved in Watergate) either of those two could easily be seen as having done better than Reagan, and if either one had then Reagan probably would never have been President.

By contrast, Carter was horrible at being President, picking needless fights with those in his own party, and trying too hard at being the idealistic outsider. As far as being President is considered, he's easily the worst between Wilson and Dubya and maybe the worst between Wilson and Trump.

Fun idea, it wouldn't take too many diversions from OTL to come up with an alternate history timeline in which Republican nominee Jimmy Carter defeats the incumbent Democratic president, Teddy Kennedy, in 1980.
