I was just thinking of all the various permutations of the last three elections.

Obama-Obama-Clinton and McCain-Romney-Trump are just ordinary Democrats and Republicans, and most people who voted in the last three elections are in one of these camps.

Obama-Obama-Trump is what most people think of as an Obama-Trump voter, while McCain-Romney-Clinton is a pretty common NeverTrump breed in suburban areas. I assume Obama-Romney-Clinton would be a pretty similar person who was just swayed in 08.

That leaves McCain-Obama-Trump. What is such a person like and what areas of the country seem most disposed to this weird pattern?

The two areas which saw swings to Obama 2012 and Trump 2016 which can't be explained by either Sandy or black turnout are the Adirondacks and south-central Ohio. Idk that much about either area, so maybe someone else can elaborate.

A die hard "The Apprentice" fan who thought that Obama was going to be a bust, but they were wrong and rewards him with the 2012 vote as the voter expected more good things to come from him. But, the voter was disappointed in the second term and turns to their idol for 2016.

Probably culturally conservative voters who might be populaist. Also some deep south areas swung to obama from 08 so I wonder about that as well

Someone from rural or northeastern Ohio who is working class and approved of McCain's military service and foreign policy, felt Romney was an out-of-touch elitist, and approved of Trump's stances on trade and illegal immigration.

These voters would be generally white working-class.

Obama '08 - Romney - H. Clinton would generally be well-off.

Was afraid Obama would impose “Sharia Law”, then saw throughout Obama’s first term that that wasn’t the case, then was swayed by Trump’s promise to bring jobs back.

There's also Obama-Romney-Trump, but I think that could be pretty easily explained as either a voter from a R-trending area who didn't switch until Obama was in office and implemented policies or a Republican completely caught up in the "hope and change" message from 2008, especially as Bush was unpopular.

I actually overheard one of these guys in my barbershop in spring 2017 when he was getting his hair cut in the chair next to me by a different barber and they were talking politics.

He was exactly what you expected him to be: white guy in his 50s living in suburban Lake County, said he wasn't a fan of Obama but hated Mitt Romney, and then said he hated Trump but he just couldn't bring himself to vote for Clinton.

I wonder if he still supports Trump or is voting Biden now.

There was probably a notable number of these on Long Island. Also no doubt many in Arizona.

I kind of wonder if there were any anti-Mormon WWC types who voted like this.
