Here's my first attempt at a what if. Get used to me being on this type of forums.

Ted Kennedy successfully defeats President Jimmy Carter in the primaries. However, in order to keep the South engaged, he picks Georgia Senator Sam Nunn. Here's what I'm thinking

✓ Former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/Former CIA Agent George H. W. Bush (R-TX): 368 EV

Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA)/Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA): 170 EV

As crazy as it sounds, I think Kennedy would actually give Ronald Reagan a tougher time then Jimmy Carter.

Teddy loses. While Kennedy does better in the north (flipping most or all the northern states Carter lost by less than 5%), he has a divided party, personal baggage, and is still somewhat tainted by the Carter Presidency given the fact that the Democrats had full control of the Government (with huge Congressional majorities in 1977-78) for the entire 4 years. My guess is the map would look something similar to this:

That's 106 EV for Kennedy, 432 for Reagan.

Ted Kennedy doing better in the South than Jimmy Carter seems just insane, Nunn or not.
