Wait, so we actually do use a kind-of Spanish pronunciation for Bexar, but we still have Am-uh-rill-oh, New May-drid, Muh-die-nuh, and duh-moin?

Yes, for a number of reasons (in this case, phonotactics), it's possible to have different words from the same source language experience different stages of sound change or just not go through all the way in the same way that Bexar did.

A-ma-ri-llo is composed of a [V CV CV CV] {V: Vowel / C: Consonant} syllabic sequence, which makes it more resistant to syllabic reduction for a number of reasons that I won't get into. Finally, all of those phones in "Amarillo" are easily already a part of the English language, whereas the "x" in "Bexar" (as a glottal fricative) is uniquely not (although that "x" could easily be converted to the equivalent of an English syllable onset "h").

Biden winning TX would be a giant upset at this point. Not nearly impossible, but Trump probably carries the state by a slim margin.

Polling wise it’d be a minor upset. Narrative wise it would earth shattering.

Well, you people in Texas keep mispronouncing Houston!  (In Georgia, Houston County is pronounced How-ston.  We also have Taliaferro County, pronounced Tolliver.)

Let's say Biden wins Texas on Election Night while the count is still out in most of the other swing states (he won't, but humor me).

Even if Trump sweeps AZ, FL, GA, MI, NC, NE-02, OH, PA, and WI, he still loses 270-268.

Well, you people in Texas keep mispronouncing Houston!  (In Georgia, Houston County is pronounced How-ston.)

....

Alright, "PQG Enemy List, entry number 421...Georgia....Moderate...."

Unofficially one of the most mispronounced large counties in the nation Tongue

Well how is it pronounced? To me it looks like Becks-r

That's the common mispronunciation.

It's pronounced "Bear".

What ?

It’s Spanish.

Spanish is my native language and for the longest time I thought it was pronounced Becks-r. The only other pronunciation that would have occurred to me would be "Béjar", much like Mexico is pronounced in Spanish ("Méjico"), and it's not even that either.

It's not quite "Bear", though, it's more like, Bay-er.

Oh, I'm not saying we pronounce it *correctly* down here.  But most folks you run into pronounce it "bear".

I will refuse to pronounce it any other way than “Bex-R”. Just like how some people call Oregon “Oregen”.  Does these people pronounce hexagon as “hexagen”?

Was worried I'd stumble into a thread of unnecessary freak out but am pleasantly surprised to see it's just a discussion of how "Bexar" is pronounced instead

Before people freak out, Biden should easily get over 60% here. This is an especially good poll for him since it was almost exclusively English when a huge chunk of the Democratic base speaks only or primarily Spanish.

Well it's a weird word.

It's also a sign of a Texan or a San Antonio local. Anyone who mispronounces it, is likely a non-Texan or non-San Antonionan.

Just ignore the "x" and think of an animal that looks like a 300-pound cocker spaniel except for not having floppy ears. Then you will not sound like a d@mnyankee  with one of those "I (heart) NY bumper stickers or doesn't heed warnings about black ice because the temperature was 80 F the previous day.

I always say it like Bayer aspirin, fwiw. Though that's pretty close to Bear.

I just don’t take county polls seriously at all, but a 98% English sample of a county that is 37% native Spanish speakers? Absolutely trash.

Trust me, I've been to Oregon many times; pronouncing it Ore-eh-gone will make the locals think you're someone who never left the East Coast bubble. Not saying that the spelling makes sense, but Oregon has a very different etymology than hexagon.

13% undecided combined with TX polls underselling Ds, I'd say Biden has a lot to grow here

Probably so, but it's interesting that Biden is running behind Beto here while running well ahead in Dallas/Austin/Houston based on what has been released in those CDs/LDs.  Seems in line with modest Trump improvement with Latinos.

In Georgia, we have some that GEORGIANS pronounce wrong. Houston County, GA is pronounced like "How-ston", and Taliaferro County is inexplicably pronounced "Tolliver"

Here in NYC, we have a Houston Street. It's pronounced "How-ston" just like the Houston County in your state.

The poll was conducted among registered Bexar County voters from Sept. 17-21 by phone and online in English (98%) and Spanish (2%) and has a 4% margin of error.

Beto +20 in 2018.

That explains the lower margin for Biden. Reminds me of NV polls.

You actually trust polling in a place like this? Lol.
