a trifecta without first giving up the white house? I'd like to think that that eventually destabilizes things to the point where a "cease-fire" is made and both sides will agree to rewrite things or even pass a new amendment.

It was already extremely rare.  Other than the Jim Jeffords party switch and 2002 (which arguably shouldn't count because he was last elected as a Republican- the result of the 2000 election produced a Republican trifecta), the last time it happened was in 1948 under Truman.

It’s possible in a President’s re-election.  Under fair maps, Dems may have regained the House in 2012.

The only way to avoid this would be to abolish midterms. You would then have the whole House and Senate up every 4 years, with the presidential election.
