If there is no vaccine within the next couple of months, than I guess we may have to go to herd immunity. People will just ignore lockdown orders if it continues past next spring
My comment before this wasn't a serious one, but I do think a lot of people do not understand that the conversation has moved past what
should happen (i.e., what a good lockdown plan is on paper) and what
can happen (i.e., what is a realistic plan for slowing the spread). Lockdowns are less effective each month, and screaming into the wind about social distancing (let alone closing down restaurants again) is just causing people to dig their heals in and a giant waste of time. Effort should be thrown 110% behind making "being open" as safe as possible with things like mask mandates, though when these are overused they also lose any effectiveness - in other words, requiring people to wear a mask while waiting in a line indoors is NOT at all the same as requiring them to wear a mask while they're six feet away from someone in a park ... the second one makes zero sense and just pisses people off.
Beyond that, you're not going to control everyone's behavior, and at a certain point people who are worried about contracting the virus need to not look to government-sanctioned "lockdowns" and instead shelter in place themselves. Lockdowns will only be accepted by enough of the population for them to be effective if A) they are perceived as fair, and B) more importantly, the hospital capacity in that area is not sufficient enough. Beyond that, more and more people are expecting others to mitigate their own risk with each passing week, and it will continue to progress in that way.
