1940 presidential election. Franklin Roosevelt was great president, but I would have also liked to see President Wendell Willkie. At the time, I may have voted for him, but it would have been a very hard choice and still is. I think he would have done well in domestic policies and as commander-in-chief during World War II.

1980 would've been a tough one between Carter and Anderson, 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Clinton.

Just going modern elections, with no hindsight:

1952
1956
1972
1988

That’s it.

1972 would have been the hardest as I would not have liked Nixon but also thought McGovern was too extreme and not as qualified to be president. That’s obviously without knowing just how crooked Nixon was.

I would respect Ike, making the 50s elections harder, but Truman would have likely kept me voting Democratic in 1952. I might have been more liable to defect in 1956, not sure.

1988 would be a case where I would respect the experience of Bush and especially his foreign policy credentials at a time when the Cold War was coming to an end, but be put off by his campaign. If the more moderate, non-Reaganite Bush from 1980 was running, I would be more likely to vote for him.

For the US, the Eisenhower elections; maybe 1992 as well. Other than those, none since 1932.

For Spain the hardest one to decide is probably 1996.

Pretty much every election from 1880 to 1928, with the exception of 1904 (Roosevelt) and 1920 (Cox). Also 1848 and 1852, where I'd be choosing between the Whig and the Free Soil candidate, as well as 1812 and 1824 (Adams or Clay).

Probably not 1952 and definitely NOT 1956. A good case may be 1996. Speaking of US Presidential elections.

In Italy presumably most of the "First Republic" parliamentary elections.

1960 (with and without hindsight)
1968 (without hindsight, with it easily HHH)
1976 (with and without hindsight)
1988 (without hindsight, with it, Bush)
1992 (with hindsight, without it, easy Clinton)
