Tax avoidance in 2016 was this big nebulous issue. Going to play a little different with that $750 figure staring people in the face

Putting the pittance Trump paid in context, his truly colossal contribution to the federal coffers is enough to get you any one of the following...

-the new 256GB 10.9" Apple iPad ($749)

-this incredibly busted 1997 Mercedes with 185K miles, a busted catalytic converter and peeling paint ($700)

-one night in a premier king room at the Trump International Hotel in Washington DC ($745)

I think $750 is worse than paying 0 from a messaging perspective.

Anyway, the next time any Republican asks, "bUt HoW wIlL yOu PaY fOr" expanded health insurance, renewable energy programs, infrastructure, etc, say, by making people like Donald Trump pay a tax bill that's more than the price of an iPad.

I’m telling y’all, this is a “The Producers”  situation. Trump was in a bad financial situation and ran to lose so he could start a right wing media network. He somehow succeed and now the g-man is coming for him.

Everywhere I read and hear, it's $750, 750, 750. That number has really ticked people off.

So the writers for this season are just stealing already famous plot lines now?  I tell ya, their hearts just don't seem in it anymore.

Trump had enough of this, and made sure to not accidentally win again.

Beginning his victory speech with "Donald Trump, you're fired!" is the way to go!

Yeah, because nothing scream’s Joe Biden’s pledge of ‘unity’ by literally immediately pissing off the other 50% of the country. I wouldn’t expect any less.

If 50% of America supported Trump atlas wouldn't exist as the internet would've been limited China style by now.

i mean this is old news by now he can just say he went around the tax laws that could of been changed by obama/biden admin but they did nothing

Even if it's technically legal for him to pay so little tax, it doesn't make it right. He has an obligation to support the rest of society, that helped make him so successful in life. He doesn't care about other people, he just sees ordinary working people as chumps who should have to pay more instead or get less from their government.

Sorry to nitpick, but while I agree with the sentiment, not so much the implication that not living on the streets can be considered "success" for somebody that inherited their wealth.

Not shocked at all by the details, but I am shocked that this is finally being confirmed. I really thought he would be able to keep these things under wraps for his whole term.

So did he.

The Presidency was just a business acquisition.

And Trump has done to the Presidency exactly what he's done with other businesses.

I suppose, but he has still benefited enormously, as everyone does, from the existence of government services and support. Trump didn't get where he is entirely on his own, the existence of a functioning government that taxes pay for has had many benefits in his life, even if these are not easily visible. So it is ungrateful and wrong for him to go out of his way to avoid paying taxes, which effectively pulls up the ladder for others to succeed-either through people less able to afford it being burdened with more tax or for the government being unable to provide as much social benefit.

The problem with all you coastal liberals is that you're using this tragic violation of a family man's privacy to poor-shame him for not having his financial affairs in order. Newsflash, libs, normal people get into financial troubles all the time, and Donald Trump is no different.

Trump sold his candidacy to voters based on his record as a successful businessman.

It turns out he is a failed businessman.

Problem is, that was obvious to anyone with two functioning brain cells in 2016.  The number of people who said that they voted for him because they thought he was a successful businessman was much greater than the number of people who voted for him because they thought he was a successful businessman.

I discovered something pretty worrying buried at the end of the article-
Quote
The president’s most recent financial disclosure reported modest gains in 2019. But that was before the pandemic hit. His already struggling properties were shut down for several months earlier this year. The Doral resort asked Deutsche Bank to allow a delay on its loan payments. Analysts have predicted that the hotel business will not fully recover until late 2023.
Maybe I'm reaching, but perhaps the conflicts of interest extend to Trump's pandemic response? It did seem odd that a germaphobe like Trump would be so soft on the virus. So maybe his business interests are why he has been so hesitant to shut down the economy and support public health measures.

Remember that Trump's core base is the contractor in a Midwest exurb who writes off his $70K Platinum Edition pickup and his wife's Lincoln Navigator as business expenses against his taxes and probably feels PERSONALLY ATTACKED.

Actually, there was enuff of that going on that there are now limits on being able to deduct high value vehicles on personal tax returns.

Here is another interesting segment in the NYT ...

Quote
His daughter appears to have received some of these consulting fees, despite having been a top Trump Organization executive.

The Times investigation discovered a striking match: Mr. Trump’s private records show that his company once paid $747,622 in fees to an unnamed consultant for hotel projects in Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia. Ivanka Trump’s public disclosure forms — which she filed when joining the White House staff in 2017 — show that she had received an identical amount through a consulting company she co-owned.

Sounds like tax fraud to me.

If he'd paid her that money as a salaried employee, she'd owe payroll taxes on it and have to pay income taxes on it all that year. Pay it to her LLC and it's business income that she can probably zero out through her own tax chicanery.

And, if you saw the post on the prior page with a Tweet (I re-posted it, above), you will see that it seems that the trump company involved, may have made a double tax deduction for "Ivanka's services."
Once in her standard salary as an executive for said trump co., and then again as an "outside consultant."
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Not necessarily. I'd be surprised if her stated salary was so low that she and TrumpCo didn't pay the maximum payroll taxes involved. It would only be rotten if they deducted the same money twice or if there's some non-tax shenanigans going on.

I'm sure Trump reported the same losses to his creditors when he applied for loans... Not.

He might have. I'm fairly certain a large portion of his tax losses are due to depreciation on his company's properties. Reform of real estate depreciation is something that really needs to be tackled in any serious tax reform.

Honestly, is anyone surprised by this? It's what I and many others said for years. There is a reason Mr. Trump is hiding the returns with phony argument of "audit". And I'm sure this report is just the tip of the iceberg. Next reports expected to come in and keep the story alive likely show hundred of millions $ in loans owned the shady banks, criminal enterprises and Russia, explaining why Mr. Trump acts like Putin's employee.

These revelations fit great into Biden's Scranton vs. Park Ave. narrative. Biden campaign and Dems need to hammer him hard both at the debate and in ads. It's enough if this swings a couple of voters in Rust Belt states and he's done. I mean, the dude paid less in federal income taxes and each office clerk. How can he run around and claim to be pro-worker and anti-elite? He's the very definition of elite. Blue collar workers can't hire accountants to reduce their taxes to $0 with all sorts of tricks and gimmicks. And this time, Mr. Trump can't even complain about the fact politicians allowed him to do so. All Biden needs to do is ask who was in charge the past 4 years and wrote a tax bill for the superrich?

And finally, the revelations prove, as others already knew, he's anything but a successful businessman. That destroys the argument he used to sell himself. Mr. Trump is one of the biggest conmen of our time. If not the biggest.
