Quote
A 9-year-old Louisiana student was suspended after a teacher reported seeing a gun in the boy's bedroom during a virtual class.

The attorney representing the child's family said it was a BB gun and the school went too far -- applying its on-campus weapons policy without considering the privacy of the child and his family.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we should be treating BB Guns, Nerf Guns etc. exactly the same as real guns.

Says his brother tripped over the bb gun and he picked it up to move it out of the way. Nothing more. Absolutely outrageous, his suspension should be revoked and the school should issue an apology. It's a bb gun not an uzi

Zero tolerance policies are absurd, same as they've always been.

Ridiculous. Even if it had been an actual gun that would be on the parents, not the kid, and suspending him over it would still be a nonsensical decision.

Insane. By your logic, the cops were justified in the Tamir Rice shooting.

And it’s even more insane here since this kid is nowhere near the other kids; it’s virtual. It could be a real gun and still would pose no threat to anybody.

Hell, I remember when I was a kid, we used to run around the neighborhood with fairly realistic-looking BB/airsoft guns and never had to worry about anything. Nobody gave us a second look. Granted we were white (most of us were anyway) but still. Nobody ever called the cops on us or freaked out because we were kids who were obviously playing with fake guns. And as for Nerf guns? Hell, we had those AT school, used them at recess, and nobody cared!

What’s next, calling the cops on kids with Super Soakers? Making finger guns?

Absolute insanity. Throwing all sense of logic and even reality out the window does not solve a damn thing. Zero injuries, deaths, or crimes will be prevented because of this decision. Utterly pointless and wrong. I really wonder sometimes why some people can’t seem to keep their heads on straight and use common sense. Such hysterical, irrational, hypersensitive overreactions to anything that even faintly resembles a gun are not going to make kids safer. In fact, I’d argue treating guns like demonic entities or something is completely counter-productive.

As far as I'm aware, the cops didn't know Tamir Rice had a gun. Here, the BB Gun was in plain sight.

I sure as hell would if I was that kid! Hell, he was originally going to be EXPELLED until people became outraged about this. So I’m glad some people at least do care. Glad they understand that kicking a kid out of school for legally owning a BB gun in his own home probably wouldn’t lead to great things for him or anybody else. Just absurd.

An article like this pops up literally every month school is in session. It's really not worth talking about anymore.

I have not seen "an article like this pop-up every month," and it is worthy of being discussed.

You will never take my constitutional right to a Nerf Gun away.
You will have to pull my 6th grade Christmas present from my cold, dead hands.

Dead0men just posted one a couple weeks ago. This is simply red meat for gun nuts. There's a lot worse things that happen in schools across the country on a daily basis than one idiot having a gun on a screen, and somehow those articles never get posted.

In fact, it's not even worthy of being discussed. Dead0men's thread went the exact same way. Everyone remarking that it's ridiculous, NYE saying crazy authoritarian stuff to bait yellow avatars, and me questioning why the article was even posted.

This is VIRTUAL School, is it not?

This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard yet.  Is there going to be a dress code for Virtual Learning?

While that wouldn't be a bad idea necessarily, I think such a dress code should be somewhat looser than one that would be in place should students actually be in school.

I'd have no problems with students showing up for virtual learning in their pajamas, but I would have problems with them showing up in shirt with a MAGA logo, a Chinese Communist Party flag on it.

There should be at least a very basic dress code, yes. Kids should not be permitted to be shirtless or wear clothing that would be disruptive to the classroom environment. The mode of instruction is virtual, but the learning is real and must go on with some degree of order.

One day, we'll all attend school/work, etc. in the nude.

That day won't be anytime soon though.

Actually, yes there is one.  I've heard of more than a few schools requiring shoes.  I get looking mildly presentable, but I've heard of some crazy stuff out there.

Kid should not be suspended. So liberals think it’s ok to spy on their students at their homes while parents are not allowed to watch and hold these teachers accountable..... I don’t think so.

I can see the argument for BB guns to have some decent regulations (though less stringent than real guns) but Nerf guns are literally toys.

Seeing something clearly visible in the background is not "spying" by any stretch of the imagination.
