Texas Senate race in 2018 if Beto calls for gun control

As everyone knows, Beto O'Rourke tried to gain some traction in the Democratic presidential primary with his gun control stance, to the point of saying that he would take one's AR-15.

So, WI he'd adopted that stance during the 2018 Senate race with Ted Cruz?  What would the effects be?

The moreover that Cruz accused O'Rourke of wanting Supreme Court justices who would write the Second Amendment out of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in order to make him look too extreme for Texas on gun rights.
