Giovanni Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He's been known as a kind of shady guy for a while, but Italian news sources are apparently saying Francis finally became aware of just how extensive his financial misdoings were and demanded his resignation.

This is the first "renunciation of the rights of a cardinal" in decades when there wasn't some sort of sex abuse angle to whatever the guy's problem was. It's drastic enough and sudden enough that some of my Catholic journalist friends are wondering if there's an arrest imminent.

I had never heard before of cardinals resigning.

Italian news media is saying that this is likely related to a shady investment into an extremely expensive palace in London made when he was Substitute Secretary of State.

It's obviously sad that this happened, but encouraging that he was actually fired for it. Kudos to Pope Francis for taking curial accountability seriously on this today.
