Home States

KEmperor:
I was curious, so I took a count of the home states of every president.  I few interesting patterns popped up.  Notice that California is the only western state to have elected a President.  (For some reason I can't get the numbers to line up straight!)

New York           8
Ohio                   6
Virginia               5
Massachusetts   4
Tennessee         3
California           3
Texas                 3
Illinois                2
Louisiana           1
New Hampshire 1
Pennsylvania     1
Indiana              1
New Jersey        1
Missouri             1
Michigan            1
Georgia             1
Arkansas           1

Taylor was registered in Louisiana but never went there.

I'm not sure how true this is, but generally the President raised east of the Mississippi wins. Here's some research: how many races have occurred where the main two candidates were both raised in New England.

What did you count Nixon and Ike as? Nixon changed his registration while in office (from NY back to California), and I've seen both New York and Maryland claimed as Ike's "home states".

Here's a count of birthplaces:
New Hampshire 1
Vermont 2
Massachusetts 4
Connecticut 1
New York 4
New Jersey 2 (counting Cleveland twice, as per American tradition)
Pennsylvania 1
Ohio 7
Illinois 2
Iowa 1
Missouri 1
Virginia 8
North Carolina 2
South Carolina 1
Georgia 1
Kentucky 1
Arkansas 1
Texas 2
California 1

Lincoln's remained the westernmost presidential birthplace for almost 70 years!

KEmperor:
I counted Nixon as California, and New York for Eisenhower.  And I only counted Cleveland once, since I wasn't counting elections, but people.
