The Whigs became a third party after a major defeat in 1852. The slavery issue divivded the once major party. I think that a major issue will pop up and divide parties. Maybe 2060 will be like 1860.

Not in the foreseeable future, I don't think. Ross Perot started things in that direction, and it fizzled. Both parties will make sure it doesn't happen. Now there's a chance a third party could come along and possibly rival them.

Well like PBrunsel said a issue will split one or both of the parties..

dream on.  nothing I'd like more to crush them all under my heels, starting with the democrats.

but I like the Opebo hypothesis a little better, which I paraphrase as:  they'll adjust as necessary, just as they've always done, as socioeconomic desires and cultural norms change so as to stay viable.

The Democrats are constantly trying to moderate themselves, and as a result, they are losing support from true liberals.  A lot of real liberals still vote Democrat, but don't truly believe in the party.  I can't even count how many people I know who will vote Kerry, but who actually prefer the Greens.

In 25 years, the Democrats will be a third party, and it will be the Republicans and the Greens.  Dems know they can't win if they run to the left, but have no sould if they run to the center.  They chose to run for the center, but with no soul, they will lose their supporters.

It would take a tremendous issue, of the magnitude of slavery, to split either party and allow a third party to replace one. The electoral system in the US almost demands that there be two national electoral parties made of broad coalitions.

The real question should be "What issue in the next 20-40 years will split a party in a way to allow a third party to rise and replace it?"

I truly believe that whatever party loses the presidential election this year is going to fade very fast.

Why do you think that?

Because if the Democrats lose it will establish them as perennial losers.

And if the Republicans lose they'll be so humiliated that people will finally come to their senses and not vote Republican again.

What is more likely to happen will be a rift between the far left Democrats and the more Conservative "New Dealer" type of Democrat. I can see them splitting but I do not know what the far lefters would name their party. More moderate Republicans will jump ship and join this new traditional Democrat party.

I don't see this happening as long as the voting rules stay the way they are.  The fact that any Green votes will sabotage the election of a Dem for President, for instance, prevents the Green Party from ever becoming viable.

What third parties need to do is try to win some state house seats, and then bargain with the major parties to get some sort of preferential voting or proportional representation in elections in their state.   This idea was able to get on the ballot in Alaska two years ago, but unfortunately was defeated.  I'm surprised it hasn't happened in Vermont.

No. Only the loser countries of the world have political parties that dissolve over a single issue (Ex. Canada's "Progressive Conservatives"). Americans political parties are made of tough shi(r)t.

Consider the GOP. After Watergate and the 1974 midterms commentators wrote off the GOP as a minor (not minority) party. Two years later, Ford lost to Carter by over a million votes, thus seeming to confirm the GOP's minor party status. But in 1980, the Republicans won a majority of the vote running against two parties!

Never dismiss the strength of the American voter.

Correction: the PC party did *not* dissolve over a single issue.
It split three ways (PC, Reform (later CA), BQ). The PC's and the CA have recently merged.

You do realise that a political party splitting three ways is the equivalent of dissolution.  How many voters will care about the differences that separate one tendon from a dead party versus another tendon from the same dead party? They don't. In Canada, they just vote Liberal and be done with it.

Er... not everyone in Canada is a Liberal.
Besides, what happend with Quebec a few years back was kinda similer to the whole CSA thing...
