1950 Ohio Senate Race

CARLHAYDEN:
When reading an article about the current Presidential campaign, I was struck by the similiarities between it and the 1950 Ohio Senate race.

The unions were intent on getting rid of Taft, and recruited the best statewide Democrat votegetter (based on record) they could persuade to make the race, and poured money and workers into the race.

For a while most pundits thought Taft was a goner, but then the Demo nominee suffered from a terminal case of foot in the mouth disease.  (One of the union campaign experts said they should have bound and gagged him and smuggled him to West Virginia and kept him there until after the general election).

Meanwhile Taft had the best campaign apparatus of his career which efficently worked for his reelection.

The union people also got too shrill and abusive in the denunciations of Taft, alienating many swing voters.

Does this sound like deja vous to you?

Filuwaúrdjan:
No

opebo:
Yes - Taft = Bush.

CARLHAYDEN:
Its interesting that Kerry does better in the polls when he goes into hiding.

Also, a Democrat politician of some standing reacting to Kerry's abysmal public speeches noted that if Kerry were to give a fireside chat, the fire would go out.

He also went on to note (mixing Kerry with fire) that he was glad Kerry wasn't able to comment on an ongoing fire in my state.  He opined that Kerry would have stated he was against the fire, but would oppose man's interfering with  nature in putting out the fire.

zachman:
Which Taft was this?
