Whether it was literal belief in Satan in the 1980s, the “soccer mom” debates of the 1990s, or Paris Hilton’s antics in the 00s, the 1980s-00s were an age of moral panics. What happened to all that?

The "mole children" element of QAnon is taken directly from the satanic panic. It's literally just warmed-over stuff from the McMartin preschool case, but with Hillary and Tom Hanks or whoever in the place of some random preschool owner.

Yeah, when I read an interview with a QAnonist and she was talking about children being discreetly taken via underground tunnels to rich elites' houses to be sexually abused and then returned home, it was like a throwback to the McMartin trial.

Society's collective memory is getting dangerously short.

No, not really. Cancel culture is an aggressive form of cultural boundary policing which is a separate phenomenon from moral panics.

It's a moral panic by those who believe in the new, secular woke religion.

Moral censure does not equal moral panic, moral panics follow a specific formula. Which isn't to say that left-wing cancel culture can't foster moral panics, because it absolutely can, but to label the entire phenomenon in itself as a moral panic is a stretch.

A moral panic is speculation about what people do in secret.

The religious right lost all their political capital so they merged with the white supremacists. That’s why gay marriage and transgender bathrooms are no longer causing god to judge America.

People responsible for that became the people who are always yelling on Reddit and Facebook about social distancing violations.

It became subsumed by politics as our society has become more politicized.

Those issues also seem rather dated among most people. For instance, trying to make hip hop controversial isn’t going to turn many heads outside the racists.
