Never realized that Sinema was an atheist. Didn't think that a swing state like Arizona would ever elect an atheist Senator. Guess this thread can be closed

I could definitely see Washington electing an openly irreligious Senator if one were to run for an open seat. The main issue I'd see is the relative dearth of lower level office holders who are openly irreligious to draw from. If I had to guess, I'd say sometime around 2025-2030.

Technically, she openly claims no religious affiliation, but not to be an atheist. We can't be sure whether she is one of the "spiritual but not religious" types or if she dodges the atheist term purely for political reasons.

So Sinema doesn’t count then since she isn’t open about it

Senator Thomas Gore (D-OK, served 1907-1921 and 1931-1937) was an atheist, so the answer is 1906 if not earlier. Irreligiosity has not always been the enormous political liability in America that it was between roughly 1960 and 2010.

Unfortunately, atheists and agnostics are grossly underrepresented because Bible thumpers kick them out of politics

Eh not really. We actually already have a few openly "spiritual but not religious" Senators too like Tammy Duckworth and Michael Bennet so if that was the case with her she'd probably just say so as well.

While not a practicing Jew, he has said he believes in God and is not an atheist in recent years. I think Sanders would be the first to come out as an atheist if he was one.
