What are some issues that you have mixed feelings about, and you're not entirely sure which side you land on?

I'm pretty ambivalent about gun control.

abortion (lean against it in my personal life, lean for it as law)
less than legal immigration (lean against it)
mass legal immigration (lean against it unless we need more people for whatever reason)
corporal punishment (lean for it for lesser felonies, against for all other more or less severe offenses)
hard drugs (I think they should be legal, I'm just not sure if some of the more serious drugs should be available at the gas station next to the cocaine, amphetamines, weed and MDMA)
trade with nations that do sh**tty on civil rights (lean for it except in extreme examples)

Decentralization vs Centralization of power

The National Question as it relates to the United States, although it ebbs and flows

Currently I’m gripping on the effectiveness of Sin taxes and the byproducts preventing social connection

The death penalty is really the only one for me. I'm torn between my idealistic desire to give everyone a second (and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth...) chance and my knowledge that some people are unfortunately truly beyond rehabilitation (true medically diagnosed psychopaths, etc). I suppose in an ideal world it would be normally "off the table" and only used in the most extreme of extreme cases if there is absolutely zero doubt (such as a mass shooting).

If there were ever a national referendum on the matter, I would probably vote to end the death penalty, but I would not be fully confident in it being the right decision.

Immigration (in the US context, not the European context), I've never been able to understand why so many people are so passionate about it.

Drug decriminalization, gun control, abortion (how to legislate around it; I unambiguously think it's evil)

I would say gun control is probably the biggest offender here. I have flip flopped quite a bit over the years and I totally see both sides of the argument, but I would say I lean in favor of keeping guns legal and limiting legislation to background checks, ammunition bans over a certain caliber (not sure about this one but open to it), voluntary buybacks, red flag laws, etc.

I have personal discomfort about abortion in the sense that I wish it was never necessary but that's just not the case so I believe it should always be safe, legal, and rare.

Decriminalization of hard drugs like heroin--I don't know if I could vote for a ballot measure that would make heroin legal. But I don't necessarily think it should be illegal? And I don't know about decriminalizing it? Who knows.

UBI is another issue that I have a lot of mixed feelings about. I see both sides, again.

Ambivalent "from the left" (i.e. my moral instincts are on the left, my On The Issues view is more ambiguous): Gun control, UBI
Ambivalent "from the right": Abortion, Israel
Ambivalent in the sense of having a highly pragmatic and transactional perspective and not understanding why so many people are so ideological about it: Trade

Honestly, most things ... there are things I care about in an "intellectual sense" (i.e., when debating or discussing these topics, I will maintain that it is important), but there are few issues that I feel very strongly about.  Some that I am especially ambivalent about include...

Abortion: I honestly think there are VERY good arguments for both a pro-choice (my tentative position) and a pro-life viewpoint, so I find it hard to muster much energy fiercely opposing a side that I concede has such a good point.

Gun Control: I generally find gun control initiatives naive and misguided, but I don't own a gun and don't really care at the end of the day.

In general, I have just become totally disengaged with politics in general, which has made this COVID world especially difficult to deal with ... escapes like traveling and sports-related gatherings with friends are somewhat hampered.  In general, my politics is guided by what I want society to be like for my descendants, so I find myself supporting initiatives to combat climate change and an evolution of the GOP that enables it to be an effective defense against our economy moving to close to socialism in the coming decades.

In a UK perspective I'm ambivalent, alongside 80% of the population on abortion. In both UK and US contexts drug decriminalisation bores me. Trade I'm ambivalent on I guess.

My most "I can see both sides of the argument" may be universal basic income and the Holy Land dispute.

My most "Why are people passionate about this" seems to be trade.

If we go to moral vs. practical I think we have abortion, civil marriage, sin taxes, probably prostitution, in a warped way labour unions...

There is also the question of the legal status of drugs but I don't know to which category it belongs.

I agree with have a gun problem, but I think a lot of the issue is the fetishization of guns, not necessarily having access to them.  In addition, mental healthcare should be beefed up.  That won't prevent all gun crime, but it's a decent start.

1. Prostitution: Putting aside my religious objections to it, my biggest concern is making widespread legal prostitution an attractive "career choice" for low-skilled, low-income mothers trying to feed their children who otherwise would not go down that route. On the other hand, pornography is, if nothing else, prostitution with a camera involved and that's fully legal. But there is also a lot of abuse in the porn industry as well, and banning that would violate the First Amendment and also put a lot of sex workers out of work.

I acknowledge that the legalization experiment in some Nevada counties has worked better than in areas where prostitution is criminalized, but without guaranteeing that prostitution not be a last resort, I'm not very comfortable making it legal nationwide. At the very least, I want prostitution decriminalized for non-clients because I don't believe it should be a jail-able offense. Strict health and safety standards also need to be enforced where it is legal.

2. War: Warfare also goes against my religious beliefs and so I cannot condone it and could never fight in one, but I also recognize that in some situations (i.e. World War II) it is a necessary evil when compared to the alternatives. (This is why I prefer to think of myself more as a "dove" than as an absolute pacifist.) One area of war I am not ambiguous about is conscription; I believe that military service should be all-volunteer under all circumstances.

I think I had a third one, but I'll come back to this thread if I remember it.

I'll add that housing issues aren't something I'm exactly read up on. I know jack sh!t about urban planning and how NIMBY-ism affects housing prices or the nitty-gritty of rent control, other than elementary things like more rent control = less people willing to rent out houses. Ask me how to fix problems like Skid Row and I couldn't tell you a damn thing, other than that I know California's laws are extremely complicated and even harder to change because so many of those laws were passed by voters, who at one point were older residents trying to keep themselves from getting outpriced by newcomers (whom I suppose would be the dreaded "NIMBYs?")

Other than that it's not something I'm very knowledgeable about or have put much thought into. Someone feel free to lend me a copy of Baby's First Understanding Of Housing and Urban Development and maybe I'll understand things a bit more.

Pretty much this exactly. As far as trade, my gut instincts tell me tariffs are good and we should try to keep jobs from offshoring. But at the same time the one thing that stuck with me from my macroeconomics class was economies of scale. It’s a little too hard for me to take a firm side on.

I would say I'm ambivalent, or at least flexible, on most of the generic political issues of the day. My core values tend toward equality, stability, and efficiency so I approach using this lens the overwhelming majority of the time. While I certainly have my own opinions about issues such as drugs, guns, sex work, taxes, and other such matters, I'm very willing to let these issues take the back seat in favor of what I consider more important: chiefly, our democracy and the equitability thereof, fighting climate change, and preventing China from becoming the world's most powerful nation.

Understanding ambivalent in its classical sense of having mixed feelings and not just being generally in the middle or undecided as it seems like it is commonly used these days, I would say immigration, trade, death penalty, and foreign policy.
