Not sure this is the appropriate board, but here goes.

There is a significant chunk of voters(3-4%) who will only vote for Trump if it’s necessary for the Court. If he nominates someone now, the oldest conservative Justice will be 71 - very unlikely to die in the next four years - and they’ll have a six seat majority. There’s no reason to vote for him for many Republicans now.

If he nominates someone and the Senate says, “The winner should pick the next Justice”, he will win a lot of votes from people who desperately want that seat. And even if he loses, the Senate could still rush someone through in November or December. Hence, he will win more votes if he doesn’t get that seat before the election, and it would tactically cost him nothing in terms of SCOTUS power.

Nope, the fear of loss is always stronger than the desire for a gain. The GOP base isn't losing anything with the supreme court seat, its the D base that are.  Speaking purely from a political perspective for the GOP side, the best option is to ram it before the election and dare Biden to endorse court packing. Lame duck would obviously respond with court packing
