- OFFICE OF THE COMPTROLLER GENERAL -

Welcome to the Office of the Comptroller General, the home of economics in Atlasia. You will find major economic figures and statements that affect the country and the world.

STATEMENT UPON ASSUMING OFFICE

Fellow Atlasians,

It has been an honor to be nominated by President Pericles and confirmed by the senate to be your next Comptroller General. I intend to be as fair and objective as I can. I see it as my primary goal to give legislators real economic data so they can craft their policies to best fit the situation on the ground. Shifts in unemployment, inflation, GDP, and so on can both be caused by legislative action and demand a legislative response. As such, I plan to publish an Atlasian Economic Report on the third Sunday of each month with key economic indicators and an explanation for how they came to be. They will be influenced by real world events, information from the Pontifex Maximus, and legislation and taxation passed by your elected officials. It is my hope that that this will improve gameplay and keep economic policy grounded in a shared economic reality across this great nation.

I am also here to provide economic forecasting and explanations. If you are considering legislation or just have a hypothetical question as to how some action will impact budgets and the economy as a whole, feel free to reach out to me and I will make an effort to provide a comprehensive response within a week.

May Dave continue to bless the Republic of Atlasia!

Well, looking at those figures, Atlasia is doing surprisingly well on unemployment (maybe Lincoln should improve, but the other 2 regions are fine)

However, Atlasia's debt/GDP is absolutely huge at 167% (even irl the US debt/GDP is only 134%)

Are we seriously going to need austerity? Cry Cry Cry

When your debt/GDP is worse than Italy's, you know you are in deep shıt.

That's for you to decide. I will add that in the coming months and years, I would expect GDP to gain 20 to 30 percent brining the debt to GDP ratio closer to 120 percent as we move out of the recession. And low interest rates make this slightly less urgent. But it is certainly an issue which deserves discussion.

The last budget I actually remember seeing (which was FY2019 fwiw) had reduced the federal deficit a decent amount. Of course, the federally mandated audit was never completed, so if we could finally get that info it could go a long way.

I imagine that a good bit of the debt is covid response. Frankly, we should be able to sustain a sudden surge in debt just like we did in World War II, provided that immediately afterwards you get serious about reducing it. This means that all programs must be funded, no deficit funded tax cuts and avoiding deficit spending except for emergencies/recessions.

The tacit acceptance of long term deficits in both good times and bad is what is dangerous. As long as you get serious though, and demonstrate credibility, the financial markets should give us more slack then what Italy got.

Bottom line, we don't need an austerity plan, we also don't need to stick our heads in the sand and pretend everything is fine. We need a solvency plan.

Mr. Comptroller General, although I am technically not a registered voter, Frémont still needs help with its budget. Don't mean to overload you with things, just wanted you to know.

I'll try to get on it as soon as I can. I have four different cost estimate projects going on right now and I've been abnormally busy with work.

It is linked in the Notice board thread.

I am reluctant to ad more stickies at a time when many are complaining about their being too many already. My preference thus is to consolidate the stickies
