I think you tell the facts. I don’t support hiding anything and acknowledging the dark parts of our past is important. I do object to the idea that slavery or racism is the only narrative that matters in american history, which is completely absurd. I also think it’s good to raise kids to love their country, in a healthy, open to improvement kind of way.

Of course not, but to be fair to Trump, I wouldn't want them to get taught the 1619 Project either. One of the central claims with that--that the American Revolution was undertaken for the express purpose of preserving slavery--is flatly anachronistic, revisionist balderdash that even skimming the Wikipedia article on the history of the abolitionist movement easily refutes. It's abominable that Trump's gauntlet-throwing has placed the American left in the position of defending this racialist nonsense by creating the impression that cultish jingoism is the only alternative.

To some extent. I think it's important to show America's many flaws, but also detail our triumphs, the better angels of our nature, and the struggle this country's been in since the very start to live up to its lofty ideals of freedom and equality. By all means point out how far off the mark we've been, but also how far we've come on so many fronts,and why those original ideals were so important to begin with.
