McAuliffe is very popular now in VA. However, his approvals were pretty low IIRC when he was running in 2013. He beat Cuccinelli by 2-3 points. Ed Gillespie only lost by 0.5% in 2014 to Sen. Mark Warner. Could Gillespie have defeated McAuliffe in 2013?

Given the political climate nationally in 2013 was largely anti-Obama/anti-Democrat, Gillespie would have probably narrowly won, and he almost certainly would have been a stronger candidate than Ken Cuccinelli.

Ed Gillespie (R) 47%
Terry McAuliffe (D) 46%
Robert Sarvis 7%

Unlikely but possible Gillespie wins.
