Here's the link

Of note:

Modi remains in first at +58, over 20 ahead of AMLO.

Olaf Scholz at -27 with 60% disapproving. Seems the German people still have a higher opinion of NATO/EU than China.

Jonas Gahr Støre in Norway is also down by 44 with 67% disapproving, which puts the 'Holocaust and oil drilling are not good, actually' crowd in a decent position for 2025.

It's good to see that Albanese appears popular.

It's not so good to see Meloni and Modhi being as popular as they are.

Everyone else is about what I expected, but forgive me if I haven't been keeping up with Japan, but why is Kishida at the bottom of this list? Why is he so unpopular?

Is there anyone more informed about the Norwegian situation that can care to inform? Cause most of last year I had polls from EUElects show up in my feed that had Hoyre way way up. Which wasn't a thing for the previous Solberg government: Ap always came in first even though the conservative block won overall. And Centre has collapsed even harder, to the point the threshold is now a threat.

Meloni has only recently taken office, let's see where she is a year from now.

Meloni is definitely in a honeymoon phase of sorts, indeed. I would not be surprised if she's still more than popular enough one year from now (which means close to the EU elections, which were Renzi's and Salvini's highest point incidentally) but I am reasonably sure fatigue will set in well before 2027.

Italy is a really bad place to be in as a left winger now.

I think it’s cool to use this thread for updates over time.

Current Update indicates 5 leaders being approved and 17 disapproved, evidence of global generalized dissatisfaction:

1. Narendra Modi (India) - net of +60
78% approval
18% disapproval

2. AMLO (Mexico) - net of +33
64% approval
31% disapproval

3. Alain Berset (Switzerland) - net of +29
57% approval
28% disapproval

4. Lula (Brazil) - net of +9
52% approval
43% disapproval

5. Anthony Albanese (Australia) - net of +6
47% approval
41% disapproval

——————————————

6. Giorgia Meloni (Italy) - net of -8
44% approval
52% disapproval

7. Alexander De Croo (Belgium) - net of -8
38% approval
46% disapproval

8. Leo Varadkar (Ireland) - net of -9
41% approval
50% disapproval

9. Joe Biden (USA) - net of -12
40% approval
52% disapproval

10. Pedro Sánchez (Spain) - net of -14
40% approval
54% disapproval

11. Justin Trudeau (Canada) - net of -21
36% approval
57% disapproval

12. Ulf Kristersson (Sweden) - net of -25
32% approval
57% disapproval

13. Mateusz Morawiecki (Poland) - net of -26
33% approval
59% disapproval

14. Karl Nehammer (Austria) - net of -32
31% approval
63% disapproval

15. Rishi Sunak (UK) - net of -34
28% approval
62% disapproval

16. Olaf Scholz (Germany) - net of -36
29% approval
65% disapproval

17. Mark Rutte (Netherlands) - net of -39
28% approval
67% disapproval

18. Fumio Kishida (Japan) - net of -40
23% approval
63% disapproval

19. Jonas Gahr Store (Norway) - net of -42
25% approval
67% disapproval

20. Emmanuel Macron (France) - net of -48
23% approval
71% disapproval

21. Petr Fiala (Czech Republic) - net of -53
20% approval
73% disapproval

22. Yoon Seok-youl (South Korea) - net of -54
20% approval
74% disapproval

The #1 leader is more approved than the #22 leader is disapproved. Extremely insane numbers for Modi considering how polarized the world has become. India is an exception amongst democracies. Granted, India may be less affected by western trends.

AMLO also is impressive as hell considering Latin America is under a level of polarization similar to the one that currently exists in the West.

As someone not up with the intricacies of Czech politics, why is Fiala so unpopular?

Looks like this has been an anti-incumbent year due to the global cost of living crisis.

They crashed and burned pretty hard starting with when they hired Jim Messina.

Nobody in Italy knows who Jim Messina is and I doubt he was exactly instrumental in Renzi's loss in the 2016 referendum (though I imagine he did not help either).

Anyway for what it's worth the PD has been polling at ~20% for months now. FdI's numbers are also stable at ~29%.

The Fumio Kishida number is deceptive.  They should really poll the Fumio Kishida cabinet.  The cabinet is usually more popular than the PM and more relevant.

I realize this comment is from January, but could you say more about why Gahr Støre is so unpopular? Labor has been polling at virtually their all-time lows in Norway for over a year now, and while it seems like every incumbent Scandinavian government is not that popular Norway feels like an especially extreme case. It isn't even like other left-wing parties -- most of which are in opposition -- are benefiting particularly.

And again - since nobody answered last time - why does Fiala come rock bottom of these polls?

Central Europe is not doing well economically -- see the defeat of PiS in Poland -- and the Czech coalition was always more anti-Babis than it was something particularly coherent.

I will say that I doubt Modi is at 78% . If he was the BJP would be headed for close to a 1984 style landslide when the INC won over 3/4th of the seats (not that much but over the 2/3rd mark) .

Instead currently expectations are the BJP will win big but it will be more like 2014(with his allied parties doing worse though) which is a smaller majority than their 2019 win .

So yeah I doubt Modi is at 78%. 60-62% I could believe but 78% seems to high given current expectations

Plenty are factors outside of his control (he took office in October 2021, so it was inevitable inflation would spike soon after)

Norway also has a across-the-board VAT of 25%, and Støre has both refused to reduce it and refused to spend record revenues.

Støre himself is also rather uncharasmatic, and therefore not the best person to handle such a task in the eyes of the public.
