Or is Trump’s base too sexist for a woman to have appealed to them the way Trump did?

No. The problem is that Trump could pull it off, not that a woman couldn't.

Sarah Palin actually might have been able to do it, had she run.

I think it would always have been harder to run in a Republican primary when the Democratic nominee was HRC. A significant number of primary voters open to a female Trumpesque candidate might have hesitated when opponents went low and compared their candidate to Clinton. Now that the precedent has been set, comparisons to e.g. presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris will be less potent, I suspect.

All this doesn't mean it was impossible. Just because Trump's rhetoric had a certain teflon quality doesn't mean his bid (even the part of it that occurred in the primaries) couldn't have been executed more competently and the higher bar might still have been within reach for the right kind of right-wing populist.

Once they were out of the primaries and into the general election, it would probably be marginally easier for them (among other reasons, because Access Hollywood would have turned away fewer voters - an embarrassing number would go from being offended to being amused). There's probably a scenario where this nomination persuades Clinton to run less on identity and somehow puts her over the finish line.

Palin would have been destroyed by Obama in either 08 or 12 (might have been a legit 400+ EV landslide) and was a has been and non-factor by 2016.

I wonder how Fiorina would have fared had she won the nomination. Probably terribly

While not super common, there is certainly no shortage of trumpist #populist Purple heart women politicians  either (at least outside the US). Just look at Marine Le Pen or the leader of the FdI.

It might be slightly harder but a woman could also pull off a Trumpist campaign.

For a US example, just look at Marjorie Greene.

That depends of what you mean with "what Trump pulled off in 2016". As stated above, populist women exist in politics, sometimes with great success, but a key point in Trump's campaigns is "making America great again", which (together with Trump's general behavior) easily can be interpreted as a returning to a (mythical?) time when straight white males were the only people that mattered, while women, as well as ethnic, religious and sexual minorities, "knew their place". Having a woman to deliver that message would look schizophrenic.

No.
The Mark Halperins and Matt Lauers embraced Trump exactly to prevent a woman from becoming president.

Any woman who talked like Trump did would have been called horribly crass and unladylike.

A three times married woman, with multiple bankruptcies, bad orange makeup, crass demeanor, and pure bullsh*t spitballing of every serious policy question would not have lasted more than couple of weeks.

Depends on the woman. Most men would love to be grabbed by the penis. But again, it depends on the woman.

Also depends on how she's "grabbing" it

This was such a fascinating exercise, but I suspect the reaction by the participant's was more motivated by the male's effeminacy rather than the woman's machismo

If a woman behaved like Trump did she would have been written off as hysterical, emotional and unstable without question.

Not sure why everyone always talks about how the Republican base is "too racist/sexist" to support [insert candidate here]. The truth is that the racism and sexism has no effect. The "she's not like other girls" or "he/she is not like other [insert race here]" effect solves everything.

So yes, a woman could have done it, and a nonwhite person could have done it. In fact, it may have even been easier, with Republican voters eager to "prove they're not [insert your favorite -ist here]."

A female Trump might have done better against a male Hillary.

Back in 2012, when for a moment Michelle Bachmann was a viable candidate for the Republican nomination, there were more than a handful of instances where Republican women stated that they liked her, they agreed with her on the issues, but they would never vote for her because "women aren't made to lead" (or something like that, you get the point).
Sexism is a powerful force in American politics, no matter how much everyone seems willing to turn a blind eye on that fact.

Nope.

All the people who are comfortable voting for Biden who were "uncomfortable" voting for Hillary show just how messed up the US is for being sexist.

If a woman acted the way Trump did, she wouldn’t have gotten more than 10% in the GOP primary, let alone actually win.

A female Trump could exist, a black Trump could exist... The trick isn't in being an angry white man, but in being able to appeal to them.
