Massive Freedom Names! They have by far the coolest surnames of any ethnicity. Kind of sucks for those Native tribes that got stuck with boring French surnames, Sioux names are the epitome of cool.

Faith Spotted Eagle is Sioux. There's also former ND-AL candidate Chase Iron Eyes and playwright Larissa Fast Horse.

And this is one of BRTD's best opinions. They're awesome names.

Sioux and the Banshees are an awesome band.

Fun factoid of the day:   "Kiss Them for Me" was about the death of Jayne Mansfield.

Bumping this because I've become involved in Native issues lately through my work and recently met someone with the surname Good Lance.

FF names. My favorite is Kills Enemy At Night.

On a related note, when reading about the Indian wars and frontier history, it's unfortunate how the name of Even His Horses Are Feared always gets mangled by poor translation into Old Man Afraid Of His Horses.

"Sioux" is an exonym but my understanding (which could be wrong) is that it's not perceived as derogatory in the way that, say, a three-syllable exonym for "Inuit" that begins with the letter E is. The issue with it--again, as I understand it--is more that there are several different Siouxan people groups and most people prefer to be referred to with the specific one they're a member of--Lakota, for instance.

Pretty cool, but don't they prefer not to be called them the S****?
Very few of them care and the name is still used in official titles. For example I lived in "Sioux County" and they've never petitioned to have the name changed, and a lot of the tribal stuff there is even legally part of the "Sioux Tribe", like look at the header of this: https://www.standingrock.org

If you're thinking of the "Fighting Sioux" controversy, that was: 1-Mostly just a very loud minority, some polls showed that a majority of actual Sioux tribal members supported the name or didn't care and 2-was more controversial over the fact that it was a mostly white team with the name and being used by a university of a state of a colonial power, rather than the notion that the name was a slur, it wasn't at all like the former name of the Washington Football Team.

On a side note many people in North Dakota still refer to them as the "Fighting Sioux" or just "Sioux" including my brother a UND alum and huge fan of their sports...but he refuses to ever wear any "Fighting Hawks" memorabilia and has a huge "Fighting Sioux" banner still up in his room. For example last week he went up to Grand Forks and went to a hockey game and was posting on Facebook about how he was at "the Sioux game."

Pretty cool, but don't they prefer not to be called them the S****?

Actually "eskimo" while somewhat controversial remains the only real term that can accurately described all Arctic dwelling Alaska Natives, "Inuit" only refers to one group, there's other ones like the Yupik and Alutiiq. And simply referring to them as "Alaska Natives" doesn't really work either, aside from the fact that they're also found in northern Canada, Siberia and Greenland, there's also "normal" Native Americans that are native to Alaska as well in the southern part, like the Tsimshian, Haida and Tlingit. These are also recognized First Nations of British Columbia that have large populations as well and are far morely closely related to the more southern First Nations in BC than any Siberia/northern Alaska peoples. Some also consider Aleut natives a different group as well.

I was thinking more about how AOE3 changed the Sioux civilization to the Lakota after consulting with tribal officials. They did the same for the Iroquois/Haudenosaunee.

It's a little bit more complicated than that; the Dakota are not Lakota but they are Sioux. It's similar to how you sometimes hear that Eskimo is an offensive term and Inuit should be used instead, but in fact the term Eskimo is commonly used in Alaska because it includes the Yupik, who are Eskimo but not Inuit.

If you want a non-Eskimo term for that type of people "Arctic Native" might be closest even if not entirely accurate... it's still more accurate than Canada's referring to them all as Inuit or the US' "Alaska Native" which as noted includes other Native groups that have very little in common with them. And if course both terms/usages are very Canadian/American-centric and don't cover Siberians or Greenlanders.
