https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/09/15/us-image-plummets-internationally-as-most-say-country-has-handled-coronavirus-badly/

Quote
Since Donald Trump took office as president, the image of the United States has suffered across many regions of the globe. As a new 13-nation Pew Research Center survey illustrates, America’s reputation has declined further over the past year among many key allies and partners. In several countries, the share of the public with a favorable view of the U.S. is as low as it has been at any point since the Center began polling on this topic nearly two decades ago.

For instance, just 41% in the United Kingdom express a favorable opinion of the U.S., the lowest percentage registered in any Pew Research Center survey there. In France, only 31% see the U.S. positively, matching the grim ratings from March 2003, at the height of U.S.-France tensions over the Iraq War. Germans give the U.S. particularly low marks on the survey: 26% rate the U.S. favorably, similar to the 25% in the same March 2003 poll.

Part of the decline over the past year is linked to how the U.S. had handled the coronavirus pandemic. Across the 13 nations surveyed, a median of just 15% say the U.S. has done a good job of dealing with the outbreak. In contrast, most say the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Union have done a good job, and in nearly all nations people give their own country positive marks for dealing with the crisis (the U.S. and UK are notable exceptions). Relatively few think China has handled the pandemic well, although it still receives considerably better reviews than the U.S. response.

Ratings for U.S. President Donald Trump have been low in these nations throughout his presidency, and that trend continues this year. Trump’s most negative assessment is in Belgium, where only 9% say they have confidence in the U.S. president to do the right thing in world affairs. His highest rating is in Japan; still, just one-quarter of Japanese express confidence in Trump.

Attitudes toward Trump have consistently been much more negative than those toward his predecessor, Barack Obama, especially in Western Europe. In the UK, Spain, France and Germany, ratings for Trump are similar to those received by George W. Bush near the end of his presidency.

The publics surveyed also see Trump more negatively than other world leaders. Among the six leaders included on the survey, Angela Merkel receives the highest marks: A median of 76% across the nations polled have confidence in the German chancellor. French President Emmanuel Macron also gets largely favorable reviews. Ratings for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson are roughly split. Ratings for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are overwhelmingly negative, although not as negative as those for Trump.

Belgium is too divided to form a government, but they almost all agree (90%) that they have no confidence in Trump on world affairs.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that having less than 5% of the world's population while having 25% of Covid deaths is no good. So much for being respected again.

Good, I trust Xi more than Trump. And given that Trump is just Putin’s puppet, I trust them both equally (not at all)

Yep this seems about right and I'm glad that Trumps abysmal presidency and anti-china posturing hasn't blinded people to the fact that Xi also sucks. I was worried about the possibility that China could escape blame for this virus by just pointing to Trump and saying look at that disaster.

If you work at a medium-sized business snd basically all of your co-workers think you're an a__hole, you might be able to learn something from that analysis ("I'm probably an a__hole").

Why should I care what other countries think?

Because international relationships are important?

All I care good about is good trade deals. I don't really give a damn what some commie in another country thinks of America. Most often, they don't like America anyway over in Europe, regardless of who is in charge.

Former President Obama has very solid approval numbers in Europe, in contrast to both Trump and G.W. Bush.

They like Obama, the person. They don't like America though, and never quite have, not for a long time, anyway.

That's comforting to tell yourself, but the reality is, most European countries have historically looked to America as a reliable partner and this has transcended individual presidencies. But Presidents like Trump will accelerate the trend towards Europe turning away from the US.

In Other words- Europe has played nice as the USA foot the bill for its defense for the last 75 years and is now waking up to the reality that the us will not continue to pay In blood and treasure for their defense

The right for 8 years said that "Obama has destroyed our standing in the world". Obviously, that was a bunch of nonsense. Trump has destroyed our international reputation even worse than Bush 43.

Worth noting that while George W Bush did burn many bridges, he did at least create some strong alliances.

The Irak war is often seen as an event that burned bridges between the EU and the US. But while most of Europe, led by Germany and France did get frosty relations; some countries got better ties to the US.

The US invasion of Irak was supported by a selection of European countries, including Spain, Portugal, Poland or the United Kingdom. There is an infamous picture here of the "Trio of the Azores" that planned the invasion of Irak, said trio being George W. Bush, British PM Tony Blair and Spanish PM Jose María Aznar.

Meanwhile there are no such silver linings with Trump. His only real achivement is maybe better relations with North Korea and that's it.

Literally this week, major treaties between Israel and the UAE/Bahrain and Serbia and Kosovo were signed, both brokered by Trump. And people literally cried tears of joy in South Korea thanks to Trump-led peace talks with North Korea. A few Asian leaders (Duterte, Modi, arguably Xi despite the trade war) enjoy better relations with Trump than Obama. One country he has not, in fact, improved relations with is Russia.

Obama's foreign policy was a disaster. Let's not pretend everyone around the world loved him so much more than Trump.
