The top communications official at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) accused career government scientists of plotting against President Trump and told Trump supporters to arm themselves ahead of the November presidential election.

In a Facebook Live video on Sunday, HHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Caputo said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was harboring a “resistance unit" to Trump, The New York Times reported.

The career scientists "haven’t gotten out of their sweatpants except for meetings at coffee shops” to plot “how they’re going to attack Donald Trump,” Caputo said, according to the Times. “There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president.”


Caputo reportedly hosted the event for followers of his personal Facebook page. His comments came after Politico first reported on Friday that top political HHS appointees have been interfering with the publication of CDC's reports on the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Times, Caputo also warned Trump's followers to be prepared for an armed insurrection, predicting the president would win but that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would refuse to concede the election.

"When Donald Trump refuses to stand down at the inauguration, the shooting will begin,” Caputo said. “If you carry guns, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s going to be hard to get.”

I was completely expecting and prepared for a haranguing.  In my real life yesterday after work, I went to the gym, cooked supper for my boyfriend and then piled  up on the couch to watch Alien: Covenant.  No one on an internet forum should feel entitled to an immediate response (esepcially when 8/9 of the comments are just petty personal attacks), and if you liken a less-than-18 hour absence from the Forum to "farts in an elevator and then immediately getting off" then you (quite frankly) need to get a life.

What I'm claiming is not a conspiracy.  All I believe is that individuals' politics affect the work they do, and that is the case even in situations like a global pandemic.  If you need evidence of this claim, just look at how  reputable scientific orgs like the WHO have proven, time and time again over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, much too deferential to China to be credible.  Domestically, the overwhelming majority of career Federal servants (especially now) are liberal Democrats who don't want Trump to be reelected.  This includes agencies like the NIH and CDC.  Politics affects these organizations, because "politics" is how any group of people makes decisions without resorting to killing one another.

Scientists have flashed their credentials when wading into the political discourse.  The parade of MDs and other scientists on CNN who deride the costs of a "herd immunity" strategy like that espoused by Dr. Scott Atlas miss that such determinations are fundamentally political, not scientific.   Stewards of academic integrity understand this dilemma.  The provost of Stanford even took to reprimanding over 100 faculty who used their university credentials to orchestrate a political hit on the White House's Coronavirus Task Force.  Fauci (perhaps the most publically-recognizable health scientist) even said, in a recent round table at Harvard Medical School, that we "cannot underestimate the potential of the pandemic.  And don't try to look at the rosy side of things."  Don't try to look at the rosy side of things?  What even is the scientific value of such a statement?  It's a direct hit on popularly-elected officials implementing policy on behalf of their constituents.  This is not an appropriate role for bureaucrats in our society no matter their level of expertise.     

All of you who want to "rely on science" as the determining influence on policy  misunderstand what science is (because a provisional and contested set of statements about the world can never directly translate into what governments should do), and the very process for organizing knowledge for policy through advisory agencies or committees (like the CDC) is political, as well as scientific.
