Two things that are actually relevant to everyday life and which basic literacy in would help people in a big way. Easy yes for me.

What say you, Atlas?

Civics, current events, personal finance, and home ec should all be mandatory classes in high school - with a big emphasis on personal finance. Just knowing how to properly budget and prioritize money can help kids growing up in poorer areas avoid a lifetime of hardship.

The problem with personal finance, though, is that it's a pretty murky domain filled with snake oil, subjective beliefs represented as objective truths, different philosophies, and obviously, vastly different needs of students. I don't think a course in personal finance would move the needle much on students' financial outcomes.

I'd rather see more emphasis on civics and general business education. And students need to learn a bit more about the world. Foreign policy is often the most important electoral issue, and you can't be expected to make reasoned votes if your knowledge of the world is limited to Nazis were bad, China has a lot of people, and Mexico is south.

Law is essentially a component of civics.  While I can see requiring a civics class, I don't think drilling down to that level of specialization for everyone is desirable. There's only so much time available for instruction.

There should be a class that corrects incorrect assumptions the public has received from watching TV and movies.
1.they don't (have to) read you your rights when they arrest you
2.henchmen can occasionally hit things they aim at
3.cars don't blow up when rear ended or shot at
4.courtrooms don't work that way, at all
5.most sex happens with the bra off
6.you can't just "zoom in and enhance"
7.most "hacking" isn't done with a GUI and certainly not "inside the computer" via some goofy 3D graphics thing
8.swords don't go "schwing" when pulled from the scabbard
9.when punching someone, there is no "pishhh" sound.  Maybe a dull thud.

No.

I would not be too opposed to personal finance classes being mandatory (or something like a super basic introduction to economics). However while it is something that most people would benefit from, it should not be completely mandatory, there are otehr classes that are arguably more important.

And like Ernest said, law is just a subset of civics. I do favour having a civics class being mandatory but law is probably too specialiced. I also do favour having a very basic government class as well so people know the political system though that can also be introduced as part of a social studies class.

You can lead a horse to the water but you can't make him drink.

This would be a complete waste of time better used on something else.
