I normally don't get much out of these apart from how long Elton John stayed on top of the charts with The Eagles in the 1970's.

But this one was remarkable in terms of the evolution of modern civilisation:

Largest Armies in the World: 1816-2020

What I did not appreciate is how the USA, being the inventor of all things 'GUN"-related has such a small army outside the 1860's.

Was also a little disappointed with China's lack of effective recording of troop numbers in the 19th century. They had agile database technologies they could have been using.

And Australia has never appeared in the top 15 by the looks.

It's interesting watching one country spike and then watching all of it's neighbors try and keep up.

Absolute numbers of troops isn't a good measure for how powerful an army is and it becomes more true as the video gets closer to present day.

Please explain to me what the heck is "Italy" supposed to mean before 1861.
By the way, not a fan of the fact that we have only left the top 15 in 2000.

However Gustav Holst in background slays.

So, at the time of the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), Brazilian Empire had one of the world's biggest armies
