Hello everyone, My name is Chips. I will be doing an essay on Russian president Vladimir Putin and why he's both despised by the West and loved by his people.

First of all, It's important to realize why he became president. The mid-late 1990's were a rocky time for Russia as the economy began to sink and oligarchs began to control much of the country's economy. Boris Yeltsin, president at the time was deeply unpopular in Russia for the worsening economy and being complicit in the drop of Russia's status as a world power. By the time he resigned he had a 2% approval rating. Boris Yeltsin chose none other than Vladimir Putin to lead the country going forward. Vladimir Putin quickly had his first chance to prove himself to the Russian people. His handling of the Second Chechen War was highly popular and thus saw a huge rise in Putin's approval ratings. For the most part, Living conditions tended to improve under his presidency. Putin has also enjoyed strong approval for his foreign policies in Russia. Putin opposes NATO expansion and US involvement in the Middle East and Venezuela as well as opposing the idea of the US being world police. Putin's approval ratings have stayed high in Russia throughout his presidency and today lie at around 60% generally for his economy and reaffirmation of Russia's status on the world stage. His position on Crimea was also welcomed by his people and many rallied behind him after the West placed sanctions on Russia. Many people have expressed dissatisfaction of his handling of COVID-19 however resulting in a slight dropoff of his approval ratings.

So, If he's loved by his people why is he so hated in the West?

Some reasons why he's despised in many Western countries are for alleged violations of human rights, press freedom as well as his foreign policy and views on the Crimea situation. He's also gotten a newfound amount of hate from Americans for his alleged interference of the 2016 U.S presidential election but Putin and Trump have both denied these accusations.

So, There you have it. Some reasons why Putin is loved in Russia and hated in Western and pro-Western nations. Hopefully I didn't come off as biased in any way.
