It is a pretty white county that has a lot of rural areas. Why is it so liberal?
This country didn’t even vote for John McCain in 2016!!

Flagstaff is a college city (Northern Arizona University) and has almost half of the county's population.

The rest of the county is mostly parts of the Navajo Nation (but also Havasupai, Hualapai and Hopi) plus what I assume will be pretty Goldwater-ian rural Whites.

As well as Flagstaff and the Native American areas, it also has part of Sedona, a New Age centre which attracts a certain type of liberal.

Yeah Sedona is comparable to Aspen or Breckenridge in that it's a liberal enclave in a relatively rural area.

I always found it interesting that this county voted straight GOP from 1952 to 1988, and then never again.

Current AZ-01 Congressman Tom O'Halleran lives in or near Sedona, as far as I know.

That was because it took until the 1990s for an increase in non-white and college-educated voters (especially in Flagstaff and immediate surrounding areas) to flip this county. Remember that this was one of the handful of counties outside the South where Hillary Clinton won but Lyndon B. Johnson didn't.
