Let's say LBJ stays in and wins at the convention while the GOP goes with George Romney.

I think this would have been an ideal situation for George Wallace to do much better and the election would have been deadlocked.

Wallace would have done much better in the south. He almost certainly would have won Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

I think the possibility for a Johnson re-election is generally underrated for all 1968 discussions, although I may be biased here. He was a mater politician and had incumbency advantage. Wallace does better with a moderate Republican, picking up Southern states. Not sur about Florida in this scenario, I think any of the three could win with with less than 40% of the vote.

✓ President Lyndon B. Johnson (D-TX)/Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey (D-MN): 273 EV. (45.09%)
Governor George W. Romney (R-MI)/Governor James Rhodes (R-OH): 199 EV. (38.27%)
Former Governor George C. Wallace (A-AL)/General Curtis E. LeMay (A-CA): 66 EV. (15.48%)

I think, baring Johnson actually achieving a Peace agreement or staying out of 'Nam all together, this is the map:

Governor George Romney (R-MI) / Sen. Mark Hatfield (R-OR): 328 EV
President Lyndon Johnson (D-TX) / Vice President Hubert Humphrey (D-MN): 124 EV
Governor George Wallace (AI-AL) / Curtis LeMay (AI-California): 86 EV
