Was it 1968? 1976, when Massachusetts was a moderate Democratic state?

This is the 1976 Map if you take away the states either Ford and Carter won by less than 5

Less than 5 Points:

Carter 144
Ford 95
States within 5 points 299

What's up with South Dakota? Pretending Carter is McGovern?

That might actually be it. Residual guilt over not picking McGovern against Nixon four years earlier, perhaps.

Even McGovern himself didn't like Carter very much.

Based on some old articles and videos I read here were a general consensus as to which states were swing states from 2000-onward

2000:

Oregon
Washington
Nevada
Arizona
Colorado
New Mexico
Minnesota
Iowa
Missouri
Arkansas
Louisiana
Tennessee
West Virginia
Ohio
Wisconsin
Michigan
Pennsylvania
New Hampshire
Maine
Florida

Total: 20

2004:

Oregon
Nevada
Colorado
New Mexico
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Michigan
Ohio
Pennsylvania
New Hampshire
Florida

Total: 12

2008:

Nevada
Colorado
Montana
North Dakota
Missouri
Indiana
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Virginia
North Carolina
Florida

Total: 11

2012:

Nevada
Colorado
Iowa
Wisconsin
Ohio
New Hampshire
Virginia
North Carolina
Florida

Total: 9

2016:

Nevada
Arizona
Utah
Colorado
Iowa
Wisconsin
Michigan
Ohio
Pennsylvania
New Hampshire
Virginia
North Carolina
Georgia
Florida

Total: 14

2000 wins.

In 1960, most of the states were battleground states

After all its the only election both main candidates won at least one county in every single state
