Obviously safe D, but I don't think he would do worse than Cox did in 2018. It would probably end up about 58-42 Newsom.

Agree. It's likely to be a much less favorable environment for Democrats, and Faulconer is probably the strongest possible candidate that the GOP can field, although California's Democratic base is very inelastic.

I mean if I had to pick a Republican it’d be Faulconer. Not that I’d want to pick one

Ha. He'll be having a good night if he cracks 40%
Considering his popularity in San Diego, the fact he's from SoCal, and that it'll be a republican wave in 2022, I imagine he'll crack 40%

Gavin Newsom is a rich kid that has no appeal to working poor to lift out of poverty, that's why homelessness has gotten so bad.

But, its safe D no matter what

In a bad environment for Dems he could possibly push Newsom to something a little like the '04 presidential map with gains in non-LA SoCal and the Central Valley, but there's just next to nowhere to gain over that even with Floridian swings among Hispanics and Asians. Titanium Likely D in a Republican wave, Safe in a moderately GOP environment or worse.

Honestly, there is maybe a path for Faulconer to get within single digits of winning. There is definitely no path for him to actually win though (or even to get "tossup close", best I think is something like Newsom+9)

This is not to say that california will elect what it needs though...
What California needs is a transparent Governor (I don't care if it's D or R) and not someone who puts out COVID-19 Restrictions YET goes to a Party himself with 10 or more people.

The Sacramento Bee & San Francisco Chronicle dropped very nasty articles on Newsom but rightly so see here:

https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/Newsom-attended-French-Laundry-party-with-more-15725393.php

https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article247175656.html

The Bee even dropped an even more nasty editorial on him:

https://www.sacbee.com/opinion/editorials/article247181176.html#wgt=trending

I can very much understand why Faulconer is furious! I would be too! Newsom can't even follow his own implemented COVID State Restrictions. It seems that these Restrictions only apply to the Citizens of CA but not for their Governor & CA Government Officials. Unbelievable!

Newsom is as bad as Gretchen Whitmer!

I am tired of this crapshow from these D Governors!

Its Safe D but Faulconer is exactly what the CA GOP needs to rebuild the party . Getting 42-43% would be a good goal

I think that could be doable, but not likely to happen. Interstingly, Newsom wouldn't be the first California governor to win reelection with a lower vote share than in the previous election. Pat Brown, Ronald Reagan and Gray Davis had smaller vote share in their second bid.

That’s odd. One would think he’d wait for 2026, when there wouldn’t be an incumbent.

That's 6 years out of office, and Newsom isn't particularly popular.

Gavin Newsom is not losing unless he's revealed to be Roy Moore's partner in crime. And even that may not be enough anymore. California, like Alabama, is a very inelastic state and very hostile to the minority party. Faulconer might be able to get 40%, but he's not going to do much better than that.
