Opening Statements Summarized

Dianne Morales: "I'm ready to be Mayor" (lol), choose the future.
Andrew Yang: I'm not connected to the city machines, hopeful, optimistic, big change
Scott Stringer: I've been here a while, seen the issues, lost my mom to COVID. NY is resilient and tough, and I know the issues.
Kathryn Garcia: I'm the crisis manager, I delivered meals, plowed the streets, pumped the water during Sandy. Make NYC livable for everyone. Oh by the way I was endorsed by the New York Times.
Eric Adams: We're in a crisis, I've been here in New York forever, I've been struggling and fighting for our city at every level.
Maya Wiley: "I am Maya Wiley." I'm a civil rights advocate, time to challenge inequality, make things better. End police violence, I'm a mom, won't accept ongoing police violence. First Mom Mayor.
Ray McGuire: "Relentless" recovery. I'll turn things around, I'm an outsider, not connected to the machines. I'll get things done.
Shaun Donovan: Time to rebuild. I have experience rebuilding our city. Obama trusted me after the Great Recession, and leading the recovery from Hurricane Sandy. I "have bold ideas and a track record to make those ideals real"

They're discussing crime, and Dianne tried to pivot away from her disastrous NYT answer on crime, saying she acknowledges the issues with crime but wants to move away from the policing approach.

Also just saying, “Show of hands” gimmicks in debates are beyond idiotic

Tuned in to see Adams give a non-answer/denial when asked about previously endorsing Guliani and being a self-described conservative Republican, comparing it to Hillary Clinton's past. C'mon, seriously??

Wileys been going after Adams pretty hard from what I've listened to so far I hope Adams gets attacked as hard as Yang was when he was the clear front runner in my opinion he's the worst of the bunch

Adams really is terrible. What a non answer on his preference of Giuliani to Dinkins. Giuliani, an insane narcissist, Dinkins, a dedicated public servant.

"Hillary was a Goldwater girl so me being a conservative Republican in the 90s is fine!"

He's an awful and disrespectful debator.
He started by laughing off the question and tried to spin it on Wiley.

Huh, I didn’t know Stringer’s mom passed away from COVID. Really sorry for his loss, I’m tempted to list him just above Adams on my imaginary RCV ballot now.

Black and Asians don't get along in NYC, Yang will HAVE to address that

The NYPD hasn’t been all that proactive about preventing hate crimes. Adams will HAVE to address that

I'm looking forward to not voting for him in the GE when/if he wins the nomination.

It's not a Morales housing answer if she doesn't shoehorn in "housing is a human right."

Well, she's right. Her's and Stringer's answers were actually quite good.

Adams is repulsive this debate (and in general) imo. I actually have come around to the view that Stringer would have the best chance to win if no allegation but now there’s no real chance for him, although he’ll hang around in the low double digits or high single digits. He had a real possible 50%+ coalition but it’s ruined now.

Adams and McGuire are such liars. Saying they both haven't voted for Republicans before. I don't believe them for a second.

I liked Wiley, she took on Adams the most and was effective, but I still think she's an out of touch pundit. Stringer would be so great if he wasn't so compromised. As for Garcia, the good is just accompanied by a lot of bad. Morales remains completely unqualified and unprepared and terminally online.

Dianne seems to be digging in on the ideological battlefield that public safety should be divorced from police. Regardless of your view on the ideology, this is a high politically disadvantageous position.

Wiley gives me Elizabeth Warren vibes for some reason. Is it just me?

A lot of Black people voted for Giuliani in the 90s despite police brutality, he probably voted for Giuliani over Ruth Messinger in 1997

It's Adams, Yang, Wiley or McGuire's race to lose.....Adams is streaking because a lot of people don't like crime and Adams is tough on crime, he is a Black cop who understands the struggle but knows that you cannot be antipolice in NYC---it doesn't work, he could probably stand up to Pat Lynch and the Long Island brigade because he knows them

A Republican who could have won if he ran would have been Martin Golden...he has name ID and could have given the Dems a run especially on crime

Carlos Menchaca endorses Dia-...Andrew Yang, (?!?), chaos ensues on his social media.

Morales supporters are NOT happy.

Didn't watch the debate, but seeing KaiserDave's comments made me really hate Eric Adams. If it comes down to him and Yang, NY is screwed. I would prefer Yang if only to not have a Giuliani/Bloomberg Republican as Mayor.
